About us

The European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees (EFPT) is an independent federation of psychiatric trainees associations. The EFPT represents the consensus of psychiatric trainee’s organisation across European countries and advocates for what training should look like, regardless of the country. EFPT goals are: - to explore the diversity and richness of current training of psychiatrists in Europe; - to support the development of national trainees’ organisations in all European countries; - to promote and represent internationally the views of the trainees in all branches of psychiatry; - to translate the discussion of trainees into action at a local level to improve training.

  • World Mental Health Day 2024 - It's time to prioritize mental health in the workplace! Mental health in the workplace is a crucial priority that requires ongoing attention and action. Work is often an obligation but can also be a source of meaning and self-realisation. However, poor working conditions, including a toxic work environment, harassment, long working hours or night shifts negatively impact mental health - and are too often present. In addition, access to employment can be a challenge for people with mental illness, with consequences for their wellbeing, social integration and financial means. As psychiatrists, we have a responsibility to educate employers, policymakers, and society about the importance of mental health and help shape informed policies that foster well-being. A supportive, mentally healthy workplace not only benefits individual employees but also improves productivity and overall quality of life. It is essential to integrate mental health into all aspects of workplace culture, including leadership, training, and daily operations. It is important to acknowledge that psychiatrists themselves are at an increased risk of experiencing mental health distress and even suicide, as evidenced by numerous studies. The demands of the profession—emotional challenges, exposure to trauma, and long working hours—can lead to significant stress and burnout. Therefore, we must prioritize our own well-being, support each other, and create safe spaces for open conversations about mental health without stigma. The Mental Health and Leadership Working Groups are committed to providing psychiatric trainees with resources to maintain their mental health and enhance resilience. We aim to equip trainees with the tools they need to cope with the demands of their work, including peer support, educational resources, and access to mental health services. In addition, we advocate for systemic changes to support all mental health professionals. By prioritising mental health in the workplace, both for ourselves and our colleagues, we can better advocate for healthier work settings across all sectors. Taking care of our own mental health is key to effectively caring for others, and together, we can create a more supportive, thriving professional community.
