“How will the incoming leadership ensure Europe’s security? What strategy do they have in mind?” We are delighted to share our Executive Director Michael Keating’s Op-Ed in Euronews, in which he makes the case for why mediation should matter for the incoming Commission. https://lnkd.in/edWeT4DX

Shaping Conflict Resolution
About us
The European Institute of Peace (EIP) is an initiative at the heart of Europe with a global scope. The EIP contributes to and complements the global peace agenda of the European Union, mainly through mediation and informal dialogue. The Institute pursues multi-track diplomacy and acts as a flexible, external tool in support of EU mediation efforts where the EU has limited freedom to act. It also serves as an operational hub, and connects existing expertise and shares knowledge and lessons on European mediation.

Over the past two weeks, the European Institute of Peace and its partners from a bespoke civil society mechanism on Kosovo-Serbia normalization held two events – in Pristina, Kosovo, and in Belgrade, Serbia – in which we presented a series of policy papers on key normalization issues and discussed the support civil society can provide within this context. Feedback on the policy papers drafted within the framework of the mechanism has been resoundingly positive, generating a wealth of insights from our partners and guests on the effectiveness of civil society. We are looking forward to following up with the official publication of the policy papers. They address a range of topics, including the state of play in the implementation of EU-facilitated Dialogue agreements, the lessons learned from the process thus far, north Kosovo, streamlining the EU Growth Plan on normalization, the common regional market under the WB6, and the Green Agenda of energy security. Our thanks to partners who have dedicated time and energy to this process. We look forward to working with you on next steps: Agon Maliqi, Ramadan Ilazi, Leonora Kryeziu, Jovana Radosavljevic, Miodrag Milicevic, Dragana Djurica, Igor B., Jovana Spremo, Sofija Todorović, Senad Sabovic

Pleased to feature in today’s @informeren. The golden era of peace agreements in the ‘90s is long gone. Conflict dynamics are now immeasurably more complex. That’s precisely why we must up our game. https://lnkd.in/ej6h7GAs (general public link)

📢 Delighted to share our latest analysis on the linkages between conflict and climate risk in Somalia's Newly Liberated Areas (Hirshabelle & Galmudug). 📃 The report delves into the intricate linkages between climate risks—such as droughts, erratic rainfall, and resource scarcity—and conflict dynamics in the Newly Liberated Areas (NLA). Through pathway analysis, it provides actionable recommendations for environmental peacemaking, aiming to support conflict resolution and strengthen resilience to both climate challenges and conflict in these fragile regions. 🙏 Our thanks to the many experts and institutions that contributed to this report with their valuable insight. https://lnkd.in/eu2YacXB

Young people bear the burden of past generations' conflicts but also carry the potential for change. We are delighted to present a series of recommendations on intergenerational and inclusive peacemaking based on the input of 45 global young leaders who convened in May at the European Parliament to mark #EIP10Years. See the full list of recommendations in the link and a summary of a few key points below: 👉 Youth cannot be considered a homogenous group. It's crucial to recognise intersecting identities and how conflict disproportionately affects certain groups. 🚧 Technical barriers such as an inability for young people to access and navigate visa support mechanisms stop then from travelling to engage meaningfully in peacemaking processes being held in safe environments. More technical support and guidance is needed to overcome these technical and practical issues. 🕊 Peacemaking is not necessarily a top-down - bottom-up process with government on top and civil society at the bottom. Power sometimes shifts sideways, diagonally, from top-to-bottom and vice-versa in volatile conflict settings. A smart 360-degree approach is needed to identify and engage with the levers of power wherever they may be. 💶 Innovative funding, including participatory and peer-driven models, need to be explored to foster sustainable conflict resolution processes and build trust. 📰 A plethora of dis- and mis-information creates a space in the market for news sources that stand for a higher degree of information integrity. Creating and reestablishing relationships of trust with the media can help lower the temperature in conflict contexts. ‼ Peacemaking must be AI-ready to be aware of the risks and benefit from its potential to unlock new insights and working methods. 💬 Integenerational dialogue as part of peacemaking is crucial. Older generations must create space for genuine mentorship opportunities, guiding young people to navigate and eventually transform outdated systems, whilst also improving mutual understanding and respect between generations. We are grateful to everyone who took part in the workshop, notably the following for helping to refine this guidance note: Anastasiia Kapranova, Program Manager at the Ukraine Institute; Aisha Khurram, Afghan youth activist and former Representative of Afghan youth to the United Nations; Alliyah L., education advocate and consultant at UNICEF, United States; Anna Popsui, Ukrainian women rights activist and Participant of the Women’s Peace Leadership Programme, OSCE; Visar Xhambazi, sbunker NGO founder. We also thank the European Parliament for providing the Infohub venue and Gonzalo Urbina Treviño dedicated to working with us to conceptualise the event, plus the support and contribution of the Institute’s personnel past and present, notably Sophia Gajan (she/her) for aptly moderating the event. https://lnkd.in/eKhn_mWc
