  • ☀ With the end of summer approaching in many European countries, now is the perfect moment to take action on upgrading or checking your heating system. The advancements in heating technologies aren’t just about staying warm, they’re about optimizing energy use, reducing costs, and contributing to a more sustainable future. Whether it's upgrading to a heat pump, exploring smart thermostats, or simply revising your current heating system, now is the perfect time to ensure you are ready for the upcoming colder months! Stay tuned as we dive deeper into the trends in the European heating markets over the last few years: 🌍In France, nuclear power provides affordable electricity, leading many households to use direct electric heating. In 2022, sales of gaseous fuel condensing boilers fell, while heat pump sales rose, a shift driven by supply chain issues and gas shortages due to the Ukraine war. Biomass boiler sales also increased, benefiting from France's extensive agricultural and forestry resources. 🌍Germany's heating market saw increased sales of heat pumps and biomass boilers in 2021 and 2022, but despite a slight decline in the demand, it still relies in great measures on gaseous fuel condensing boilers. Hybrid heat pumps also experienced a significant surge but remain a small market segment. 🌍Traditionally, Italian households have relied on gas heating due to the robust gas grid. However, due to incentive schemes, 2021 and 2022 saw a significant shift towards electric and hybrid heat pumps, with sales surging in 2022. Despite this, gas boilers also saw a slight sales increase and still dominate the market. • 🌱 As we push towards a more sustainable future, heat pumps stand out as a key technology for the #decarbonisation of the building sector and increasing energy efficiency. However, despite their potential, the heat pump market continues to rely heavily on government support to stay viable and barriers to their deployment persist, including: 🚧 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬: The upfront investment for heat pumps can be very high, making them less accessible to the average consumer without having access to government support and incentives, especially when combined with the fact that energy prices remain very high. 🚧 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬: Inconsistent regulations, and policy frameworks across regions, as well as unstable incentive schemes, make it challenging to streamline deployment. 🚧 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬: Retrofitting existing buildings for heat pumps can be complex and costly. For heat pumps to truly take off across Europe and reach the sustainability goals set by the #GreenDeal, we need continued innovation, supportive policies, and greater awareness. It's essential that a new European Parliament and EU Commission as of 2024 will need to prioritise strategies to increase consumer demand, and the EU governments will have to fund the transition to help overcome these barriers and unlock the full potential of this technology. This was at the core of our Secretary General Federica Sabbati’s contribution during the China Heat Pump Forum in Shanghai. • ☀As summer brings high temperatures across Europe, it's easy to forget about winter and our heating systems.   However, now is the ideal time to plan a review and upgrade of your home heating appliance, as your local installers may not be as busy as during winter. The European heating market is continually evolving and new technologies are being brought to the market to fit every home and improve your home energy efficiency and... your monthly energy bills! See how different heating markets in Europe are evolving. Join us as we explore the trends over the last few years:   🌍Austria's heating market experienced a rapid transition from gas and oil to wood heating systems and heat pumps, which has significantly slowed down since. In 2021, sales of gas boilers fell sharply, and driven by geopolitical concerns and strong government incentives, existing homes started switching to wood heating, while new buildings are opting for heat pumps.   🌍Belgium started a shift from gas and oil to more sustainable heating, with heat pump sales soaring by 76.5% in 2022. Government incentives and industry efforts are driving this change, trying to overcome challenges like high renovation costs and a shortage of skilled installers.   🌍In Denmark, the heating market is dominated by district heating and heat pumps, and in 2022 heat pump sales surged to 26,700 units. The Danish government is trying to push this with initiatives like the "building pool," now split into heat pump and energy renovation pools, to promote renewable technologies and energy efficiency. Despite this, gas boilers still outnumber heat pumps in installed stock. • 📢 𝐄𝐇𝐈 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐋𝐘 2024! This year our annual flagship event took place in Warsaw and gathered the main stakeholders in the European heating industry and Polish policymakers to discuss heating market trends across Europe, the latest legislative updates at EU & national levels, and the priorities for the sector in the next months. Here are our key takeaways👇 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬: high energy prices, especially for electricity, and ever-changing frameworks of financial incentives for consumers are the main factors that led to a significant decrease in heat pump sales across Europe in the last months. This poses a critical challenge to heat pump deployment to the levels agreed by the EU. To improve, we require new strategies at the EU level and a stable incentives framework at the national level; 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐝𝐨: anchor the ambition of REPowerEU targets for efficient heating systems to legislation and maintain the ambition while supporting its implementation by working on what impacts the market - energy taxation, flexible tariffs rewarding consumer investments, resilience of electricity grids - rather than on bans. Consumers need a sound business case to invest in an efficient heating system: lower energy bills;  𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭: to keep a thriving European industry that can drive the decarbonisation of the building sector and the EU economy, policymakers need to send a clear signal that competitiveness of European industry is a priority and to focus on ensuring a level playing field with non-EU manufacturers with a set of EU rules that passes the international competitiveness-test;  𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥: for sustainable and affordable decarbonisation of the building sector it is key to keep a multi-technology approach. Different technologies using different renewable energy vectors will provide a more suitable and cheaper decarbonisation scenario in 2030-2050 than an electrification-only scenario, as shown in the Guidehouse study.
