It was a pleasure to take part in the panel discussion today on "Next Generation Destination" during the Cruise Week Europe conference, held in Rotterdam, Netherlands. A dialogue between public authorities, private sector representatives from travel and tourism, and the local community is essential. The goal should be to deliver a forward-thinking plan for better destination management in the future. Together, we can build a bright future for destinations, focusing on resilience, sustainability, and digitalization. Thank you to CLIA Europe for the kind invitation. I look forward to continuing our dialogue!

🔎 1 Year On: Ensuring Fairness and Transparency in Google Search One year ago, the European Commission launched a non-compliance investigation into Google’s practices under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Hotels and restaurants across Europe face growing uncertainty about how they reach their customers through Google Search. This lack of clarity has led to higher costs, reduced visibility and limited ability to engage directly with guests, putting additional strain on businesses of all sizes. As a sector that creates millions of jobs and drives sustainable growth, European hospitality needs a balanced online environment – one where consumers can make informed choices and businesses can compete fairly. The DMA is a crucial step towards ensuring a fair and competitive digital marketplace. We urge the Commission to take a pragmatic and effective approach to enforcement. By prioritising fairness, transparency and consumer choice, Europe can safeguard its tourism industry and maintain its position as the world’s top travel destination. 📢 Tackling skills shortages in hospitality is a top priority for HOTREC That’s why we support the Union of Skills initiative, launched by the European Commission. Our specific focus areas include: 🔹 Up-skilling & re-skilling opportunities 🔹 Making vocational education & training (VET) a first choice 🔹 Promoting legal migration to fill sectoral gaps 🔹 Encouraging diverse forms of work The Union of Skills aims to enhance basic skills, support lifelong learning and facilitate recruitment across the EU. Here are the 3 key proposals: 🔸A skills guarantee pilot to help workers transition between jobs & sectors 🔸A skills portability initiative to improve recognition of qualifications across Europe 🔸A visa strategy to attract top talent, students & trained workers At HOTREC, we are committed to supporting our members in developing national-level initiatives to tackle skills shortages. The devastating floods in the Canary Islands remind us that climate-related disasters are an ever-growing challenge for the hospitality sector. Preparing for such crises is no longer optional, it’s essential. HOTREC’s Crisis Resilient Guidelines, developed with Hotel Resilient, provide practical steps to help hospitality businesses anticipate risks, protect lives and recover swiftly from disasters like floods, heatwaves and wildfires. 🔗 Learn how your business can strengthen its resilience: https://lnkd.in/eNvARrWn MYRIAD-EU #CrisisResilience #Hospitality #Sustainability #ClimateChange #BePrepared
🚨 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 HOTREC, in collaboration with Hotel Resilient, has released new 𝘾𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙨 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙂𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 to support hospitality businesses in Europe, including hotels, restaurants, cafés, and night-life venues, in preparing for and recovering from natural hazards. As climate change increases the frequency and severity of disasters like floods, droughts, heatwaves, and forest fires, these guidelines provide a framework for enhancing the industry's resilience. 🛎️🏨🍽️ For context, the guidelines were inspired by scientific research developed by the EU funded project MYRIAD-EU , which focuses on multi-hazard, multi-sector, and systemic risk management, and has tourism as one of its sectoral priority areas. The guidelines focus on: 1️⃣ Assessing hazards and strengthening buildings 2️⃣ Improving evacuation and communication systems 3️⃣ Establishing robust business continuity plans. By following these practical steps, businesses can better protect their guests, staff, and operations in the face of disasters. While these recommendations are voluntary, they are crucial for enhancing resilience in our ever-changing environment. 📢 Marie Audren, HOTREC Director General, commented: "As climate-related hazards become more frequent and severe, it's vital that the hospitality industry adapts to safeguard guests, staff, and businesses. These Crisis Resilient Guidelines offer our members practical steps to enhance preparedness and ensure a swift recovery from disasters. Together, we can build a more resilient future for the entire sector." 🗣️ Bijan Khazai, Hotel Resilient and Risklayer CEO, added: "In today's climate, resilience isn't just a necessity – it's a responsibility. By partnering with HOTREC, we've developed these guidelines to help hospitality businesses anticipate risks, protect lives, and recover quickly from disasters. With the right tools, businesses can not only survive crises but emerge stronger." 🔗 Read the full article and learn how you can implement these strategies: https://lnkd.in/en3PEgdA #CrisisResilience #Hospitality #Sustainability #ClimateChange #Preparedness

✂️⭕ A win for hospitality businesses! The European Commission’s new Omnibus package cuts red tape on sustainability reporting. Last week, the Commission unveiled a set of measures to simplify sustainability reporting and reduce administrative burdens by up to 35% for SMEs. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞: 🔹 Limiting Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) obligations to companies with 1000+ employees, reducing the scope by 80% 🔸 Introducing voluntary reporting for smaller companies 🔹 Delaying due diligence requirements under the CSDDD to give businesses more time to prepare 🔸 Making EU Taxonomy reporting voluntary for companies within the CSRD scope 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲? HOTREC has long called for simplified reporting that supports SMEs, promotes competitiveness, and reduces unnecessary bureaucracy. This package is a step in the right direction, aligning with the priorities in our 2024 EU Elections Manifesto. 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬: The proposals now go to the European Parliament and Council for approval. This initiative is a milestone in securing a more sustainable and resilient future for the industry. The Rhodes Forum reinforced the sector’s dedication to meeting EU climate goals while ensuring that businesses, large and small, have the necessary tools and support for the green transition.
