After 9 incredible years, filled with creativity and thousands of visitors, the museum will close its doors at the end of the current exhibition ‘Multitude’ by Alexandre Farto aka Vhils, on January 5, 2025. Why? It may sound like a Belgian joke, unfortunately it’s not. This past April, we were still making plans for the future, including an extension project but the road leading to the MIMA being at risk of collapsing into the canal has forced the museum to close. This blockage has made access difficult cutting our attendance by more than 50% and making it impossible to host events. With repairs estimated to take over a year or two, and no certainty of a return to normal, continuing this adventure is no longer viable. MIMA Since opening in 2016, we have presented 17 exhibitions and welcomed 400,000 visitors! Our most visited show was the one of Jean Jullien, with 44,850 visitors. 2019 was our best year, with 61,800 visitors drawn to “Dream Box” and “Obsessions”. The MIMA has earned its place as a beloved contemporary art museum, especially among families and young people from the city, with groundbreaking exhibitions like “Local Heroes” and “Art is Comic”. We’ve shone a spotlight on emerging artistic scenes often overlooked by traditional institutions, reflecting societal change and gaining momentum on social media. Beyond being known as a “street art museum,” we’ve built a more complex identity: a playful space for artistic discovery. We want to thank our visitors, the artists, our partners and collaborators for your support over these amazing years ❤️ Come celebrate our final chapter and experience “Multitude” before we say our last goodbye. https://lnkd.in/eNtf_uyh
