On September 6th, Re-Imagine Europa participated in the panel of “The Participation Lasagna: How Does Citizen Participation Look on European, National, and City Levels?”, held during the Ashoka Changemaker Summit 2024 “True Participation” that took place in Hamburg, Germany. The panel explored the challenges and opportunities of participatory #democracy across various levels of governance, from grassroots to institutional initiatives.  As the next five years will be key for the #EU to embrace participatory democracy, the challenge lies in generating innovative ideas to address complex and polarised issues. The future of European democracy will rely on the ability of creating a well-layered “participatory lasagna” that integrates local, national, and European levels effectively. This past week, I had the incredible opportunity to speak on the panel 🍝 "The Participation Lasagna: How Does Citizen Participation Look on European, National, and City Levels?" at the Ashoka #ChangemakerSummit 2024. Alongside inspiring changemakers like Diana Adams, Michal Horský and Gregor Hackmack, we explored the many layers of citizen participation across different governance levels — from the European Union's policy-making corridors to grassroots movements in our local communities. Our discussion was a powerful reminder of the essential ingredients for a successful 'lasagna': 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱. #Technology, too, plays a crucial role in enhancing this engagement and breaking down barriers to participation. 📣 By fostering inclusive participation, we unlock the potential for innovative ideas and solutions to emerge from the 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 of all citizens. To achieve this, a fundamental 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 is essential — one that 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹. There is much work ahead, but I am hopeful that by embracing these principles, we can build a more participatory democracy across #Europe and beyond! 🤔 What is the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change? 🤔 To contribute to the implementation of the EU Adaptation Strategy, the European Commission launched the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. The EU Mission focuses on supporting the EU regions, cities and local authorities to better understand the climate risks they are and will be confronted with in the future. In addition, it aims to develop their pathways to be better prepared and cope with the changing climate, and to test and deploy on the ground innovation solutions needed to build resilience. The EU Mission will support more than 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030, by supporting research and innovation, sharing knowledge and best practices, engaging citizens in the development of the adaptation policy.
