📣 7 European and international organisations of authors and performers’ collective management organisations call on Eduskunta | Riksdagen | Parliament of Finland to reverse the cut in #PrivateCopying compensation. Read our statement: https://lnkd.in/eGEQbZAv ⚠️ The Finnish government’s decision to halve the level of private copying compensation paid from the state budget - from €11m to €5,5m - cannot be justified. On the contrary, a recent study shows that the actual damage caused by private copying in Finland is €46m per year. We welcome the recent appointment by the Finnish government of a special rapporteur to examine the potential alternative mechanisms for the future private copying compensation, the level of compensation, and the way in which it is distributed and allocated to the rightholders. ⚠️ This severe cut would seriously harm authors, performers and the Finnish cultural sector. We therefore call on the Finnish Members of Parliament to: 1️⃣ Ensure that the level of private copying revenue is maintained at least at a minimum of €11m during the interim period - before the special rapporteur’s work is finished and the new system is up and running in practice. 2️⃣ Swiftly update the private copying system to meet the standards set by the EU legislation and CJEU, and to accurately reflect the extent of copies being made and their evolving use, particularly in the digital environment, to ensure a sustainable and fair level of compensation for Finnish authors and performers. ✍️ Signed by: AEPO-ARTIS, BIEM - Bureau International des Sociétés gérant les droits d'enregistrement et de reproduction mécanique, CISAC, Collecting Societies for European Visual Artists , GESAC - authorsocieties.eu, IFRRO and the SAA. --- (Kopiosto I #WeLoveAuthors)

Read the CISAC Global 🎶 🎬 🎭 📖 🎨 Collection Report, 2024 Read the full report here: https://bit.ly/48rwWJK ✨ Highlights: 📈 Royalty income from the AV repertoire (globally) grew by +8.3% (+5.5% in Europe) to reach €700m in 2023. Collections have solidly recovered post-pandemic & are now +15.9% above their 2019 level. AV collections are severely limited by the small number of countries. 🎶 Music remains the largest repertoire. 📉 Broadcast collections fell by -4.0% in 2023. TV and radio income was +0.7% ahead of 2019. Societies report a continued gentle plateau in collections for traditional radio and TV income. Royalties are most affected by the fall in viewer numbers and TV advertising income. ⏩ Despite continued increases (across repertoires), societies in Europe continue to highlight the disconnect between the picture of overall digital growth and the negligible returns from streaming royalties for the vast majority of their member creators.

#Netflix brings a lawsuit to the Belgian Constitutional Court. Scam.be writes about it on its website: 🔹Netflix in Belgium is challenging the EU's Audiovisual Media Services Directive (#AVMSD), which requires financial contributions from audiovisual media service providers and platforms, to support the independent production of films and audiovisual works. 🔹Netflix's complaint attacks the audiovisual funding system set up by the European directive. A system that promotes the development of independent European production and cultural diversity policies in the audiovisual sector. 🔹The European Audiovisual Observatory | Observatoire européen de l'audiovisuel's report shows that 35% of investment in the audiovisual sector is invested in the UK and 18% in Spain. In Belgium, this percentage drops to 2%. 🔹Netflix's appeal is part of a strategy by globalised operators to reduce regulatory policies in Europe. Small member states like Belgium are among the first targets. ➡️ About the case: https://lnkd.in/ei73gZJU (original in FR) ➡️ Historical background: https://lnkd.in/eeKaDNCR (original in FR)

⚡ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭! This time, no LinkedIn summary from me - you really should read the report 🙂. Just one message 👇 ⭕ It’s about a vicious circle that emerged quite clearly for me during the research process: 🔄 Europe is grappling with the rise of right-wing movements, social polarisation, and a degradation of democracy. The risks are serious, the stakes are high. Yet, the future is still predominantly designed in economic terms (think of 400 pages of the Draghi Report). Culture remains sidelined, seen as a 'weak' and 'less relevant' portfolio. It is not part of the SDGs, the Green Deal, or the Democracy Action Plan. 🔄 Meanwhile, cultural policymaking has been working hard to justify its existence by aligning with external causes - whether in economics, diplomacy, or well-being. The cultural sector has also adopted this instumentalising approach for survival. As a result, 'intrinsic value' has become a complacent, hollow concept. 🔄 We continue to advocate for culture by focusing on 'spillovers' and external impacts, but in doing so, 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤: 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞, 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞. 🔄 Meanwhile, instrumentalising culture hasn't solved the sector's problems. It remains increasingly precarious, and investment in culture has declined over the past decade - despite the data, evidence, and the beautiful frameworks we were developing to measure its impact. '𝐖𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐥 𝐛𝐮𝐭, 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝, 𝐧𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐲' (citing Justin O'Connor) 🔄 At the same time, societies are becoming more polarised and individualised, and Europe is facing a democratic decline (here we go, the vicious circle... 🔝). ❓ If not culture, what other force can bring us together and advance the centuries-long conversation about who we are as a society? 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞, 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐬. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐬? For more, read the report : https://lnkd.in/eX6nUkm7 I would like to thank the team of Culture Action Europe, in particular Lars Ebert, Natalie Giorgadze and Luiza Moroz for our collaboration on this important project!
