🏥Hospital pharmacists are at the heart of health management, ensuring that medications are used safely, effectively, and efficiently. They play a critical role in keeping healthcare systems running smoothly by guaranteeing timely and equal access to safe and appropriate medicines and medical devices.
👩⚕️Behind every safe prescription is a dedicated hospital pharmacy team. These professionals work tirelessly to monitor prescriptions, optimise drug therapies, and ensure that each patient receives the right medication, in the right dose, at the right time. Their expertise is essential in managing complex treatments and providing the best possible care.

Across the EU, many hospitals still rely on outdated, manual inventory management systems that are prone to errors and inefficiencies. These systems make real-time monitoring difficult and slow down hospitals' ability to respond to sudden changes in demand.
⚠️Key challenges include:
- Inaccurate stock levels leading to medication shortages.
- Delayed response times, making it harder to address urgent supply needs.
- Higher risk of medication errors due to manual data entry.
- Difficulty tracking expiry dates, increasing waste and safety risks.
- Limited system integration, prevents smooth coordination between hospitals and broader healthcare networks.
To address these challenges, there is a growing need to prioritise digitalisation in hospitals across the EU. Digital tools, such as automated robots, dispensing cabinets, and connected IT systems, can enable real-time monitoring, improve inventory accuracy, and enhance coordination in responding to shortages.

Last year, we published a paper analysing how hospitals across Europe manage their medication inventories. It highlighted the crucial role of digital solutions in improving stock visibility, preventing shortages, and strengthening healthcare resilience. The report identifies gaps, challenges, and solutions, advocating for:
- Policy support to drive hospital digitalisation.
- Cross-sector collaboration to build robust, interoperable systems.
- Better integration of digital tools to ensure medication availability across Europe.
📦By modernising hospital inventory systems, we can create a more efficient, responsive, and resilient healthcare system, ensuring that patients always have access to the medications they need.
