NEW: Electric cars are expected to reach up to 24% market share in 2025, giving carmakers a clear path to comply with EU clean car rules, new T&E analysis shows. While some manufacturers call for flexibility over their CO2 targets, forecasting suggests that BEVs will contribute 60%, on average, of the CO2 reduction that carmakers need to achieve for the EU emissions targets next year. Modelling based on sales in the first half of 2024 and sales forecasts shows an expected rapid growth in EV sales over the next year. This will be partly driven by seven new fully electric models under €25,000 which have arrived or are coming on the market in 2024 and 2025. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed in July that the zero-emissions car target will go ahead in 2035. Last week the German government ruled out watering down the 2025 target. It’s time for carmakers to go all in on BEVs, while EU and national lawmakers should do more to support EV demand with policies such as corporate fleet targets, charging masterplans and social leasing schemes. About us
Transport & Environment (T&E) is Europe’s leading advocate for clean transport and energy. Our mission is to fight for an affordable zero-emission transport system that benefits both people and the planet. Since our formation in 1990, we’ve shaped some of Europe’s most important climate and environmental laws, such as the creation of the world’s largest carbon market for aviation and the EU agreement to ban the sale of new combustion engine cars and vans by 2035.

The EU Commission rightly points out that the car industry has had years to prepare for its climate targets. Now carmakers want the EU to declare a state of emergency so they can continue selling dirty cars and making large profits. ❓ Will #carmakers meet the #2025 #CO2 #targets? 🔍 Last week, the car industry called for an EU crisis clause to delay their 2025 CO2 targets by two years, citing weak EV sales. 🚨 This demand is absurd and unacceptable. (https://lnkd.in/euPWAK38) 💡T&E took a closer look at carmakers’ #strategies and found that: ➡️Meeting the 2025 targets is totally feasible. There’s a clear compliance trajectory and plenty of options for all carmakers to comply. ➡️In particular, EVs are expected to reach 20%-24% market share as carmakers prioritise them to meet EU targets. 👨🍳 Here’s the recipe for how carmakers will meet the target: 1️⃣ #BEVs will do most of the heavy lifting, contributing 60% of the CO₂ reduction. This will be fueled by the launch of seven new #affordable EV models (under €25,000) arriving in 2024-2025. 2️⃣ #Hybrids will contribute to 20% of the reduction. Despite being a short-sighted strategy (offering just 7% lower emissions than ICEs), the share of mild hybrids is expected to double (from 19% to 37%). Stellantis and Volkswagen are relying the most on hybrids. 3️⃣ #Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) will contribute to 8% of the reduction, with their market share expected to plateau at max 9%. BMW is particularly dependent on PHEVs, with an 18% share. 4️⃣ Regulatory #flexibilities (including ZLEV and eco-innovation credits) will account for the remaining 12% of CO₂ reductions. Carmakers also have the possibility to ‘pool’ with others. 🇪🇺 Key takeaways: ❗ Delaying the transition will only hurt Europe's #competitiveness, making it harder to catch up with global EV leaders. ✅ We welcome the decision by von der #Leyen and the German government to end the uncertainty over the car CO₂ targets. ⚡ Now it’s time for #governments to step up: build a stable regulatory environment for EVs, push national #charging plans, and set EV targets for #corporate #fleets. 👇Find more in Transport & Environment (T&E)'s briefing, including insights into each OEM's strategy (see comment).

T&E's Krisztina Hencz (Toth) is at the ICAO Symposium in Montreal this week where the aviation industry and its stakeholders have gathered to discuss the growing problem of contrails and non-CO2 emissions. No more delays. It's time for global action to addressing the dangerous and overlooked warming caused by contrails, NOx and other non-CO2 effects.
It’s been 25 years since the IPCC’s report made it clear that #non-CO2 #emissions are a major contributor to #aviation’s #climate impact, accounting for 2/3 of the sector’s total warming effect. And yet, it is only now that a dedicated global event is organized. This week I’m at the #ICAO Symposium in Montreal where leaders are finally recognising the magnitude of this problem. While the event is a long-overdue step, it underscores how slowly we’ve moved on a problem we’ve known about for decades. Bringing together experts from academia, industry, and policy is vital, but discussions alone won’t cut it. We need concrete regulations to address the warming caused by contrails, NOx, and other non-CO2 effects that have been sidelined for too long. Moreover, we can’t afford to wait for global consensus - that could take years. And unfortunately we don’t have this time. Regional action is key. Europe, North America, and other regions should lead with ambitious initiatives to reduce non-CO2 emissions, pushing the global aviation industry to follow. The science has been clear for 25 years, the time for talking is over—it’s time to act.

The UK could raise an additional £6bn a year by charging a tax on jet fuel at the same rate that British drivers pay for petrol. Despite the massive climate impact of aviation, the sector continues to dodge taxation that is applied to other forms of transport fuels, such as for cars. Transport & Environment (T&E) UK suggests introducing a fair equivalent that would tax the 11mn tonnes of kerosene consumed by planes taking off from the UK in 2023 and could bring in between £400m and £5.9bn a year in revenue. NEARLY £6 billion! That’s how much we could have raised in 2023 if #aviation #fuel was taxed the same as the fuel that goes into our #cars. But the #UK doesn’t tax aviation fuel at all, and it never has. Nurses, plumbers, farmers - all of them have paid more tax on the fuel they buy than the aviation #industry ever has. This is despite the huge #climate impact, air #pollution, and adverse #noise effects that burning #fossil fuel in #planes causes. You may hear the aviation industry say that we can’t tax jet fuel. But that’s a lie. We not only can tax jet fuel, we must. Not only would a tax on jet fuel generate valuable #revenue to address the costs of the damage done by plane pollution, it would actively reduce #emissions - emissions that are currently bouncing back post-Covid. The car industry is demanding that the EU triggers its crisis clause so it can.... delay car emissions targets. This is absurd. Art 122 is used for emergencies such as the Ukraine War and the Covid pandemic, not for carmakers to go selling polluting cars. Our response ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eT2Cicki #CarCO2

As the market for battery-electric trucks grows over the coming years, Europe must shift its focus to rolling out the public charging and depot infrastructure that will make this transition possible. T&E’s Kim Kohlmeyer will be at the IAA TRANSPORTATION in Hanover next week to speak on how we can ensure this infrastructure network has adequate funding and that logistics companies have the support they need to make the switch. In this clip from electrive she discusses what it will take for companies in Germany and beyond to begin to see the benefits of a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) for electric trucks. #ElectricTrucks #TCO Transport & Environment (T&E) Deutschland
