WATERBORNE is as an industry-oriented Technology Platform to establish a dialogue between all waterborne stakeholders
About us
WATERBORNE has been set up as an industry-oriented Technology Platform to establish a continuous dialogue between all waterborne stakeholders, such as classification societies, shipbuilders, shipowners, maritime equipment manufacturers, infrastructure and service providers, universities or research institutes, and with the EU Institutions, including Member States. The strategic objectives of the WATERBORNE TP are: - Establish a continuous dialogue between all stakeholders in the waterborne transport sector and in other waterborne-related sectors on R&D; - Contribute to the widest possible consensus regarding R&D and to focusing of efforts and resources; - Develop a common medium- and long-term R&D Vision and a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA); - Contribute to the appropriate mobilisation and allocation of the necessary financial resources (private/regional/national/EU sources); - Contribute to the social expectations regarding clean, competitive and safe waterborne transport as well as regarding other waterborne-related activities, including education and training. For WATERBORNE to reach its goals, it is necessary to engage all relevant stakeholders of the European maritime industry, such as classification societies, manufacturers, research institutes, shipyards, shipowners, or universities, as well as the European Institutions and Member States. This approach should ensure that, whilst national policies will vary according to particular challenges, effective mechanisms are developed to enable adequate research coordination and cooperation between the relevant stakeholders at EU/EEA level.

Deployment of innovations in the European waterborne sector WaterborneTP welcomes the selection of waterborne projects in the framework of the EU Innovation Fund. To be able to comply with environmental targets, the deployment of innovations needs to be further increased and requires a targeted approach. Eero Lehtovaara: We warmly welcome the results of the call for proposals in the framework of the Innovation Fund. The results include a mix of both energy supply, and integration of technologies on board. In addition, the most recent results of the auction mechanism in the Innovation Fund presented specific waterborne projects in terms of dedicated fuel supply for maritime offtakes. We also express our gratitude for the principle of co-designing mechanisms like the EU Innovation Fund, in the context of the diversified European waterborne sector. In the coming months, we will continue to work on strengthening the deployment of innovations, which will be one of the key themes during the upcoming edition of the Waterborne Days 2025. Together we will be able to achieve sustainable competitiveness, to the benefit of us all. Full press release is available here: https://lnkd.in/eXvbtrn6

Technology leadership at the heart of Framework Programme 10 WaterborneTP welcomes the report of the European Commission’s Framework Programme 10 Advisory Group, calling for technology leadership. On 16 October, the Advisory Group on Framework Programme 10 published its report “Align, Act, Accelerate: Research, Technology and Innovation to boost European Competitiveness”. Building on these recommendations, the independent experts are calling for an increased, more focused and protected budget. According to their analysis, this investment would position Europe as a leader in international R&I collaboration and governance. Eero Lehtovaara: We warmly welcome the emphasis on technology leadership in the report, which is in line with the main theme of our long-term strategy. The report highlights not only the important role of research, development and innovation, but also the indispensable link with demonstration, upscaling and deployment. All these elements need to be taken care of in an integrated approach, together with the public and private stakeholders of the European waterborne sector and taking into account its specificities, including the large number of SMEs. Furthermore, we can fully support the call for an increased, more focused and protected budget. However, technology leadership requires a dedicated initiative for the waterborne sector. Simplification of instruments does not necessarily correlate with the diversity of this sector, nor with the main theme of the report, competitiveness.
