On Wednesday our Head of Office, Ester Asin Martinez, will be speaking at the conference ‘Strong Winds, Thriving Seas’ organised by Renewables Grid Initiative, WindEurope and the Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature (OCEaN)! The panel will dive into how we can prioritise biodiversity in harmony with offshore wind and grid ambitions in European political agendas in the coming years. Alongside, participants can also tour a solutions-oriented fair, learn how offshore wind and grid development can be nature and people-positive, and network with leaders from across industry and civil society! #ThrivingSeas2024 Check out the full agenda and register here 👇 https://lnkd.in/edPHWjfr

France must be the #CSRD leader the EU needs! Following the worrying French Prime Minister’s statement on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, the need for a strong example on the implementation of the law is more urgent than ever before. 🔑 Legal certainty is essential for the success of the EU Capital Market framework. We need robust sustainability data to drive the green transition of EU companies. Remember: No meaningful data = No credible transition. 🚫 🚨 A delay of CSRD implementation signals a lack of consequences and a tendency to reward laggards instead of leaders. This is true for companies as well! Member States, the Parliament and the Commission need to provide clear guidance and support to companies already implementing the CSRD. Instead of casting doubt, let’s focus on facilitating a smooth rollout. 🌍 Europe deserves a bright and sustainable future, and France must stay at the forefront of CSRD application not give up its ambition.

💸 €260 billion—that’s the cost of climate change in the EU over the last decade. Simplifying climate & environmental laws by lowering the ambition or standards could lead to even higher costs for businesses and society, such as those related to floods, droughts, pollution, fires, and health impacts. The EU must focus on smart implementation to ensure that the laws we already have deliver their full potential, equipping businesses and governments with tools and resources necessary to effectively address implementation, compliance, and enforcement, ensuring that climate and environmental laws deliver on their promises. It could save the EU economy at least €55 billion annually in health and environmental costs. Smart implementation means: 💻 Leveraging digital innovation 🧭 Clear guidance and active stakeholder engagement 🏛️ Enhancing public administration efficiency 📉 Reducing administrative burdens for EU fund beneficiaries, without weakening control, oversight and targets 🤝 Building capacity and staffing national authorities 🔍 Stepping up inspections and enforcement 💡 Learn how we can turn this around: https://bit.ly/4hbxSWu

WWF EPO is participating in a global wave of action against large-scale #biomass energy, to tell world leaders at #COP16 that bioenergy destroys #Biodiversity. In Europe, when it comes to wood, our legislation treats pretty much everything equally, from large tree trunks to sawdust. Even though the climate impacts are radically different. More and more trees are being burnt for energy in the name of #ClimateAction. In reality, the climate impacts of burning wood are substantial: 🔥Burning wood creates more #emissions than #FossilFuels. 🌳 It takes a long time for trees to grow back, and recapture the carbon from the atmosphere. 🪵Even dead trees would take a long time to rot (and release carbon) if they were left in the forest. Our myth buster document counters the forest biomass industry’s most common arguments. Find out how we debunk them here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ezQC4jtV Want to know more about the International Day of Action on Big Biomass? 👇 https://lnkd.in/ewMWMw6B

EU Member States have agreed to 12 months more deforestation 💔 Despite strong calls from civil society and progressive companies worldwide to protect forests, Member State ambassadors decided to back the European Commission's proposal for a 12-month delay in the application of the EU Deforestation Law. This is a deeply disappointing step backward, undermining one of the key achievements of the European Green Deal. This delay effectively allows another year of deforestation driven by EU consumption, putting forests, biodiversity, and the climate at further risk. We urge the European Parliament to reject the Commission's proposal for a delay, and to act in the interests of long-term sustainability rather than prioritising short-term business pressures. Europe is increasingly facing extreme heatwaves, droughts, floods, and wildfires. Let’s face it: climate change isn’t just a future threat; it’s a present reality. While we need to step up our efforts to fight it, we must also strengthen our resilience and prepare for its impacts. The key to this? Working with nature. The upcoming European Commission climate adaptation plan will be crucial to create a more climate-resilient future. 🏦 Banking and insurance supervision on climate-related issues have progressed over the past four years, according to new findings of WWF´s Sustainable Financial Regulations and Central Bank Activities (SUSREG) 2024 annual report. However, efforts to tackle broader environmental issues, such as nature loss, remain insufficient and its integration into monetary policy and central banking activities seriously lags behind. 🚫🌍 🌱 In particular nature-related risks such as deforestation and conversion, freshwater, and oceans and marine habitats remain largely unaddressed in most regulatory frameworks despite being a cornerstone of effective climate mitigation. 🚨 As the Earth approaches dangerous tipping points posing grave threats to humanity (WWF Living Planet Report 2024), a huge collective effort will be required over the next five years to tackle the dual climate and nature crises. A new report from the European Environment Agency shows that water resources are still under severe pressure, with little progress since 2009. This is alarming! As our colleague, Claire Baffert, Senior EU Policy Officer, Water & Climate Change Adaptation, rightly points out, the persistently lousy state of Europe’s waters shows that Member States are failing, year after year, to address the water crisis!
