Using the power of the law to protect life on Earth.
About us
We are a non-profit using the power of the law to bring about end-to-end systemic change: informing, implementing and enforcing the law, drafting and advising decision-makers on policy, building legal expertise, and ensuring citizens’ access to the laws that defend them. We take governments to court – and win. We force polluting industries to shut down. We protect irreplaceable forests and vulnerable species. We empower people and NGOs with the legal rights to bring forward environmental battles of their own. Using the law means that we create real, long-lasting and embedded change. We’re working to secure a lasting civilisation in which people and nature thrive together. We work in partnership across borders, systems and sectors, ingeniously using the law to protect life on Earth.

💙Historic climate court action💙 This week, a court in Germany will hear the groundbreaking case of Peruvian farmer Saúl Luciano Lliuya against RWE, supported by Germanwatch e.V. and others. Saúl began legal action against the German energy company in 2015, alleging that its carbon emissions have been contributing to the melting of a nearby glacier that could flood his home. This case has significant implications for holding high-polluting companies liable for climate damages. The court is expected to formally set a precedent confirming that companies can be held liable for climate change impacts caused by their carbon emissions. A decision on the next steps could come as soon as Wednesday. Companies are facing increasing scrutiny over climate damages. A recent report found that there are over 40 ongoing cases that aim to hold companies liable for the damages their emissions have caused. Cases like these are vital for holding companies to account for the damage they cause, and for applying pressure on them to do better. We send Saúl and his team all our support as his hearing begins. #SaulvsRWE

How can litigation drive systemic change in the fight for climate justice? The law is one of the most powerful tools we have to hold governments and corporations accountable - and to protect people and the planet. In the new episode of climate podcast Outrage + Optimism, our CEO Laura Clarke OBE joins Paul Dickinson to discuss how ClientEarth is using the courts to challenge corporate greenwashing, enforce environmental laws, and push for real climate action. From the Dutch courts ruling against KLM’s misleading advertising to stopping a Polish company from branding coal as "eco-friendly," legal action is forcing businesses to tell the truth. But not every case needs to be won to create impact - just the prospect of litigation can drive change, as seen in our case against Shell that sparked global boardroom conversations. And it’s not just corporations - governments must also be held to account. At ClientEarth, we take legal action to ensure they uphold their environmental commitments and put the planet before politics. 📢 Listen to the full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/dPAcwEep

Netflix's new series Toxic Town follows a group of mothers seeking justice for how the toxic pollution in their town has harmed their children. Communities living in these 'sacrifice zones' are the victims of industrial greed and negligence, where their health and safety is sacrificed for profit or to cut corners. Despite overwhelming evidence of harm, regulatory action to ban the most damaging chemicals often lags behind, allowing industries to continue polluting for decades before meaningful restrictions are imposed, and/or those responsible are held to account. The victims of chemical pollution should have their stories told and their voices heard in court. More here: https://lnkd.in/e4c_DpiC

The European Commission's Omnibus proposal is a disaster for corporate accountability. It's set to gut protections for people and the planet in the name of simplification and competitiveness. We're telling the EU Council and Parliament: step up and reject this rollback. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eD5f-6Gf
