Empowering communities and change agents to redesign their relationship with resources: nothing and no one is disposable

About us

Zero Waste Europe was created to empower communities to rethink their relationship with resources. In a growing number of regions, local groups of individuals, businesses and city officials are taking significant steps towards eliminating waste in our society. We work towards a world where nothing and no one is disposable! Zero Waste Europe engages at two levels: • Supporting local groups with independent knowledge and streamlined tools to drive change more efficiently, • Structuring the movement internationally to better represent the interests of our communities at the EU level and engage policy makers with a unified voice. In these regards, Zero Waste Europe operates both as a knowledge network and as an advocacy group, representing active communities in 28 countries.

🚨𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁 - 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘄🚨 Europe has a vast untapped potential for collecting, treating, and valorising bio-waste today. Since January 2024, it has been mandatory for EU Member States to collect bio-waste separately, but poor bio-waste models are still implemented—or not at all—due to a lack of enforcement. 💡 How big are the gains if we get bio-waste right? And how can we do it? On 5 November, join Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) and Zero Waste Europe for a webinar to discuss the findings of the second edition of their report on the current and future availability of bio-waste in the EU-27 (published on the same day). You will hear from and discuss bio-waste with EU and local policymakers, key stakeholders, and practitioners—including ZWE's Scientific Committee Chair Enzo Favoino, and our member ZERO's Ismael Casotti Rienda. 🏘️🚮 The power of community in bio-waste management: the story of Partizánske The Slovak city of Partizánske is showing how municipalities and communities can work together to create effective bio-waste collection programmes. This small municipality has achieved significant results by addressing kitchen and garden waste separately and implementing tailored solutions for different types of housing. 🌿 95% of households in single-family homes are now home composting, cutting down 118 kg (36%) of mixed waste per person since 2018! Overall, the city has reduced its mixed waste by 18%. 💡 These achievements are also saving the city money, with savings exceeding the costs of the programmes! 🎓 Community education and collaboration have been key to success. Local groups, like Friends of the Earth - SPZ, teamed up with zero waste experts to help design and roll out these initiatives. While there’s always room for improvement, the story of Partizánske is a model for cities across Europe to follow. 🏙️ Want to know more?
