Develop strategies for gender mainstreaming in regional mining and petroleum sector policies

About us

The creation of WIMOWA took place on July 21, 2015, in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, during the 2nd annual meeting of women's associations in the mining sector of the UEMOA space organized by this institution, with the aim of increasing women's contribution to community mining development. The participants in this meeting, which was held as a Constitutive General Assembly, came from Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. The nine countries automatically became founding members of WIMOWA and stipulated, among other things, that : - any West African national association with legal capacity and which pursues the same objectives as the network may be an active member; - the title of honorary member may be awarded to any individual or legal entity that has rendered eminent services to the network or contributed significantly to the promotion of women's leadership; - any personality with skills useful to the network's activities may be co-opted as a resource person; and - although the network is non-profit, it may provide services and assistance for a fee. The primary objectives of WIMOWA are : - to work for the emergence of active women and leaders in the mining and petroleum sectors in West Africa; - to establish a sub-regional consultation framework for the promotion of extractive industry activities in Africa and in the world.
