Greetings from Cape Town: Shaping sustainable mining and navigating ESG challenges in Africa at Mining Indaba 2025 DMT had the pleasure of attending Africa's premier mining investment conference #MiningIndaba2025. Global mining titans, ministerial delegations, and investors came to Cape Town to see what Africa has to offer regarding its critical minerals and how Africa will help shape the green transition. Our team, including mining specialists from our branches in South Africa and Germany, started the Indaba with a team hike on the table mountain with a great view. At the event they enjoyed enlightening discussions with delegate attendees, existing and potential clients, and political representatives around sustainability, critical minerals, and responsible mining. DMT Kai Batla, as part of the DMT GROUP and a partner in the AfricaMaVal Program, was honoured to host the AfricaMaVal workshop on Presenting Africa’s Potential, Projects, and Investment Opportunities in ECRM Value Chains. Royston Lobow and Trisha Ramsaroop were presenting at this event. With Africa positioned at the crossroads of immense opportunity—rich in resources, innovation, and untapped potential—this workshop highlighted key investment pathways, transformative projects, and the role of EU-Africa integration in advancing critical raw material (CRM) value chains. Bringing together a diverse group of experts, the event fostered insightful discussions on Africa’s evolving role in global markets. Our session on #secondary raw materials sparked insightful discussions on the potential of #ewaste and other secondary resources in strengthening Africa's value chains and advancing responsible sourcing. Our very own Adrien Specker set the stage with an overview of e-waste generation in Africa and South Africa, emphasizing the vast untapped value in proper collection and recycling. Other expert contributions included: 🔵 Dr. Dominic Vooght on how to optimise reverse logistics networks for end-of-life lithium-ion battery recycling; 🔵 Pravashen Naidoo on sustainable recycling solutions and #circulareconomy strategies to support job creation and environmental sustainability; 🔵 Steffen Schröder on scaling up industrial e-waste recycling, diversifying raw materials, and mitigating supply chain vulnerabilities in volatile markets. The session reinforced that secondary raw materials are not just a byproduct but a strategic opportunity to strengthen value chains, secure resource supply, and enhance #ESG compliance and responsible sourcing. #MiningIndaba #AfricaMaVal #SecondaryRawMaterials
