Head of ANRAV CCUS project | Alternative Fuels in Cement Industry | Sustainability | Decarbonisation |
Thrilled and honoured to participate in COP29 Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 as a speaker at the Bulgarian pavilion 🇧🇬 organised by Green Transition Forum. It’s been a great discussion about the transformative role of cleantech in reshaping traditional industries and the decarbonisation pathways in the different sectors of the economy. In a way, this is (was) one of the most challenging COP meetings, due to the changing political Global landscape and the urgency actions to be taken to reach a Global Consensus on climate goals. 🎯🌳📚🧩🔬💡🚦♻️ Cement industry took a decisive but challenging path to Net Zero and is doing its best to create market demand for low-carbon products. We at Heidelberg Materials Bulgaria are committed to implement ANRAV / First CCUS Project in Eastern Europe and promote sustainable products to our customers by 2030. To achieve this target, we are focusing on a mix of technological solutions, including increased use of alternative fuels, lowering the amount of CO2 intensive clinker in cement, product optimization, increased circularity, and the deployment of CCUS. The direction is set, but to deliver the goals timely, we need few very important pre-requisites: 📍EU & member states to Increase the level of coordination across the multiple policies impacting Hard to Abate industries. 📍Simplify and accelerate permitting, and reduce compliance costs and regulatory burden, in line with the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA new provisions). In particular, the report asks for the permitting limits of the NZIA (12/18 months) to become the norm for decarbonisation investments, as well as for a ‘one-stop shop’ permitting for decarbonisation assets. 📍Need for more financial resources from both the EU and national governments, with a larger share of EU ETS and CBAM revenues to be invested in these industries, looking at both CAPEX and OPEX levels Would like to thank Monika Stanisheva & Green Transition Forum for the professional organisation and the high level of speakers selected this year. Big thanks to Ellen Wasylina for moderating this important panel, as well as to my fellow panelist George Kremlis, Kostadin Sirleshtov, David Zorn & Natalia Moulin Aguiar, MSc for the discussion. 👏
