The COP29 Presidency continued participation in the UN General Assembly with a series of events and bilateral engagements. Among other events, President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev addressed the UN General Assembly High-level Plenary Meeting “Addressing the existential threats posed by Sea-level rise.” Drawing on recent visits to Antigua, Barbuda, and Tonga, he underscored the urgent need to address the devastating effects of climate change on coastal communities, particularly Small Island Developing States (SIDS). As a sign of the importance COP29 places on leading an inclusive process that raises the voices of those most vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis, the Presidency also announced that Azerbaijan will be funding members of the delegations of all SIDS to attend the conference and its preparatory meetings.
