Sounds like a very valuable experience, Sydney West! #BFISScholar2023
This past summer I returned to Bermuda to work with Liberty Mutual Insurance (Bermuda) within the #HealthcareUnderwriting Department for my third and final 13-week Co-op Term alongside Andrew Osborne, Jordan Commissiong and Zalikah Ratteray. I was over the moon about this opportunity because it is an aspect of insurance I have yet to hear about in my short time within the industry. I was so prepared to roll my sleeves up and get myself elbows deep into this new line of business and ready to embrace all the learning that comes with it. Mini testimony: Once I wrapped up my previous co-op term, I set the goal to work somewhere different. Not because I did not like where I was working but because I liked it too much. It was all too good to be true, my team was great, the synergy with other teams was amazing, I learned a lot, and I had fun both in the office and offsite! I am beyond grateful for the experience because it provided the strong foundation I needed to catapult in this industry, being offered both personal and professional advice, and attending different events ultimately changed my perspective on what the industry had to offer. Being naturally curious and adventurous, I wanted to push myself further and take full advantage of the opportunities available to me. Therefore, I wanted to challenge myself by exploring something different—a new country, a new industry, or a new department within insurance that I hadn’t yet encountered. So, I began applying to many co-ops that interested me in various industries in Canada with the hopes to land a job in Toronto or the UK (without the logistics figured out). Another reason why I wanted to land a job in another country is because I was eager to build an international resume to complement my advanced major in international business. However, despite my best efforts, I didn’t secure a position abroad. With new country and new industry off the table, I turned my focus back to Bermuda internships. I interviewed with two companies on the same day after weeks of interviews with various companies. The first interview went well, but I knew it wasn’t the right fit for me. Before my second interview, I prayed, “If this is meant for me, let me say all the right things.” Toward the end of that interview, one of the interviewers said, “You said all the right things,” and I knew I had found the right place. The conversation felt genuine, and I could truly see myself working at this esteemed organization. By the end of the day, I had three verbal offers in my inbox. All of this reminded me of a key lesson: What’s meant for you will always find its way to you. Things may not always go according to your plan, but they will unfold according to the Lord’s plan. Trust that He is working on your behalf and always has your best intentions at heart.
