I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Farmers' Research Network (FRN) Convening in Kisumu from October 28th to 31st. This inspiring event brought together farmers, researchers, policymakers, Donors and NGOs, all united by the goal of transforming our food systems. Key Takeaways: ✨ Farmers as Co-Researchers: Involving farmers in research leads to practical solutions that address real challenges. ✨Collaboration and Inclusion: Resilient food systems need the collective effort of all stakeholders. ✨Co-creation of Knowledge: Empowering farmers to share their experiences can drive positive change in agricultural practices. 📝 Localization of Research: I learned the importance of documenting and sharing research findings in ways that resonate with farmers. #frnconvening #agroecology #sustainablefoodsystems #MyFoodMyCultureMyFuture

Thrilled to have participated in the Thousand African Youth Summit on Food Systems & Agroecology, organized by the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA). This youth-led summit was an incredible platform to connect with young leaders from across Africa. We explored why youth are essential drivers of agroecology and agricultural transformation, diacussed innovative, youth-led solutions to adapt to the climate crisis and address Africa's food system challenges. Key lessons included the importance of agroecology in climate resilience and sustainable food systems, with inspiring examples from African youth demonstrating practical agroecological opportunities. It was also empowering to discuss the urgent need to advocate for agroecology’s inclusion in the CAADP Strategy and Action Plan to ensure policy alignment with our goals for a sustainable future. #1000AfricanYouthSummit #Youth4Agroecology #Agroecology #ESAFF #Youth

This pretty much h describes the food sovereignty movement’s grassroots action, including agroecology schools & dialogues all around the world, building on local farmers’ and their communities efforts to radically transform the food system from the ground up - ecologically, socially, culturally, politically & economically. Connectivity is core to movement building, and a reminder that a crowd is not a movement - collectives and networks are!

"Despite current ads and slogans, the world doesn’t change one person at a time. It changes as networks of relationships form among people who discover they share a common cause and vision of what’s possible." - Margaret J. Wheatley & Deborah Frieze Yesterday I had a video conference with Vijaykumar V and one of the proposals was to talk about social and cultural #transformation. Just this topic came up at the end of our conversation and to this question, I told him that I was just writing a post about an interesting ‘theory of change’ that seems very plausible to me. This theory is explained in a small 9-page booklet by the Berkana Institute called "Using Emergence to Take Social Innovation to Scale" (link in the comments). Some Insights: 💡 "Networks are the only form of organization on this planet used by living systems. These networks result from self-organization, where individuals or species recognize their interdependence and organize in ways that support the diversity and viability of all. #Networks create the conditions for #emergence, which is how life changes." 💡 "In nature, change never happens as a result of top-down, pre-conceived strategic plans, or from the mandate of any single individual or boss. Change begins as local actions spring up simultaneously in many different areas. If these changes remain disconnected, nothing happens beyond each locale. However, when they become connected, local actions can emerge as a powerful system with influence at a more global or comprehensive level. (Global here means a larger scale, not necessarily the entire planet.)" THE LIFE CYCLE OF EMERGENCE STAGE 1️⃣ "We live in a time when coalitions, alliances and networks are forming as the means to create societal change. There are ever more networks and now, networks of networks. These networks are essential for people finding like-minded others, the first stage in the lifecycle of emergence." STAGE 2️⃣ "The second stage of emergence is the development of communities of practice (CoPs). Many such smaller, individuated communities can spring from a robust network. CoPs are also self-organised. People share a common work and realize there is great benefit to being in relationship. They use this community to share what they know, to support one another, and to intentionally create new knowledge for their field of practice." STAGE 3️⃣ "The third stage in emergence can never be predicted. It is the sudden appearance of a system that has real power and influence. Pioneering efforts that hovered at the periphery suddenly become the norm. The practices developed by courageous communities become the accepted standard. People no longer hesitate about adopting these approaches and methods, and they learn them easily. Policy and funding debates now include the perspectives and experiences of these pioneers." ⭕ Finally, the slogan I use ‘Creating Meaningful Synergies’ fits perfectly into the emergency cycle.

The Farmer Research Networks Convening in Kisumu, Kenya was an amazing experience! Over 100 individuals (farmers, funders, NGOs, governmental officials, international organizations) from 20 countries and multiple languages descended in Kenya to discuss and champion participatory, inclusive research in agroecology...with farmers at the center of the conversation. Jane Maland Cady and the Global Collaboration for Resilent Foods Systems' program team at McKnight did an awesome job. A focus on the importance of agroecological (AE) transformation, soil health, farmer agency, and AE policy was so informative. We must understand what we are eating and champion for sustainable practices in agricultural research. It was also great going on a site visit in a local village...just a life changing experience!

At Slow Food Uganda, we believe in the power of local resources to transform agricultural practices and foster sustainability. We are dedicated to educating and encouraging communities to harness what is available around them, paving the way for a healthier planet and more resilient farming practices. One of our key initiatives focuses on training farmers to manufacture bokashi, a fermentation process that turns organic waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. This innovative method not only boosts soil fertility but also promotes a circular economy by reducing waste in our communities. #Agroecology #RegenerativeAgriculture #Bokashi #SustainableFarming #CommunityEmpowerment #SoilHealth #LocalResources #EcoFriendly

Integrate agroecology in the NBSAPs.
🐝 VOICES from hashtag #COP16 🌱 Why does agroecology matter at COP16? Today Mary Irungu Policy Advocacy Programme Coordinator at PELUM Kenya Association gives us her insights from Cali! 👉 Mary is at #COP16 to sensitize negotiators about the potential of agroecology for #biodiversity action and to understand how the knowledge of smallholder farmers and indigenous communities in preserving biodiversity is taken into account in the negotiations. 👉 She explains that #agroecology is important at COP16 as it enables impactful biodiversity protection on farms and within the food value chain beyond conservation areas. 👉 For Mary, the Guidance Tool “Boosting Biodiversity Action through Agroecology” is a key starting point for to pursue the dialogue with focal points in Kenya's Ministry of Agriculture to integrate agroecological principles and interventions into national plans to protect biodiversity. ➡️𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 our Guidance Tool: nbsap.futureoffood.org https://lnkd.in/e3VizbMn #Agroecology for hashtag #biodiversity hashtag #COP16
