The rise & impact of South Asian music in Canada 🎤 🏆 Back in March when the 2024 JUNO Awards took place, we saw Panjabi-Canadian artist Karan Aujla win the 'TikTok JUNO Fan Choice' award. While it was heart-warming to see the BC native take the stage to perform and receive the award, the 5X team couldn’t help but notice the lack of representation for South Asian artists across all categories—so we spoke about it publicly. Yesterday, The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences/The JUNO Awards announced changes to its nominating and voting process. The 2025 JUNOs submissions will now include two new categories: South Asian Music Recording of the Year and Songwriter of the Year (Non-Performer), presented by SOCAN. South Asian (specifically Panjabi) music created in Canada by Canadian artists continues to outperform many genres on the world stage, as we have proven to be at the epicenter of South Asian music globally. This is a definite win for our community and a step in the right direction, as the global impact of these South Asian Canadian artists are unmatched. This new category will open doors for emerging South Asian talent across Canada and contribute to the growth of this South Asian cultural renaissance. 📣 The new category now means our community must show up and claim our seats! 📣 1) Sign up as a member of CARAS to participate in the nominating and voting process. If you actively work in the music industry, you can sign up to become an academy delegate (member) of the organization. 2) Submit your work! If we don't submit, we can't be nominated. 2025 JUNO Awards submissions open on October 15, 2024 and will be accepted until November 7, 2024. Shining a spotlight on Canadian-made South Asian music was long overdue, and we can't wait to see how this continues to develop and unfold. The 54th JUNO Awards ceremony will be held at Vancouver's Rogers Arena on March 30, 2025.

Our Executive Director and Marketing Director were invited to celebrate Sikh Heritage Month and Vaisakhi with parliament members this week in Ottawa!

5X Festival was invited to Vaisakhi on the Hill! My colleague Bhavneet Toor Kang and I attended the celebration in Ottawa as guests of Member of Parliament for Surrey Centre Randeep Sarai. We were asked to show a video on the impact Sikh Canadians have had on the music industry in Canada and I'm sharing an excerpt from the video script here: "Some of the biggest hits within the last decade of the Punjabi music industry have been created right here in Canada. These collaborations have helped to further broaden the appeal of Punjabi music by introducing new audiences to this genre, as well as mark chart breaking records in Canadian music history. 4 of the top 10 tracks in India in 2023 were made by Punjabi Canadian artists. Many of these artists come here first as international students as they see more opportunities for themselves in this country. These artists continue to amass billions of streams on music platforms around the world, however, despite all of their measurable success, it’s taken the entire nation a long time to recognize and support these artists who have been proving themselves on their own terms." During my brief address to the Liberal caucus and reception attendees, I spoke about the big why behind our organization: "belonging". I, like many young Sikhs in Canada, grew up confused about who we were. We didn't know if we were Western, Canadian, Sikh, Panjabi, South Asian, Indo-Canadian, or a combination of them all. Our organization works to create space for the multiplicity of all these different, competing elements to be explored and expressed. We were grateful to have sat in on a roundtable discussion with Kamal Khera, Taleeb Noormohamed, Parm Bains, and Sukh Dhaliwal on behalf of the Department of Canadian Heritage to discuss some of the funding challenges for organizations like ours. Notably, how grants can be inaccessible for BIPOC organizations and how we can further strengthen our commitment to diversity and inclusion in Canada. "As cultural producers, our mission is to build a world where we belong and thrive. Adapting with time, 5X Fest now acts as a platform that showcases brown artists of all mediums by providing a stage to emerging artists, as well as a bridge for the new youth who are exploring themselves as hybrid identities. Our events often host artists who go on to the global stage and international festivals. We are advocates, lobbying for access, opportunity and recognition for these hybrid artists, while also acting as a steward for their unique cultural identity in a globalized world. Punjabi music is now one of the most widely recognized and celebrated music genres in the world today and has become a global phenomenon on social media platforms by crossing cultural and language barriers appealing to audiences around the world. It goes without saying that the rise of Canadian Punjabi artists adds to our economy, and blueprint of Canada's culture, as the power that these artists hold are unmatched."
