In the wee hours of Wednesday, October 9, AltaLink’s south lines crew executed a special project in Banff National Park. Osprey had chosen energized equipment on one of our transmission structures to build a nest, posing a risk to their safety and to the safety and reliability of the electric system. To mitigate the risk, the team installed deterrents on the energized equipment and a new artificial nesting platform at a safe location on the structure. Osprey are known to come back to the same nest every season. They often select power poles as nest locations due to their height and unobstructed views of waterbodies where they hunt for fish which make up more than 90% of their diet. This work required a power outage, so AltaLink selected the middle of the night during a time of milder temperatures, to minimize the impacts to local businesses and residents. One benefit of doing this work in the middle of the night? The chance to capture the aurora borealis. 📷 Photo credit: Jordie McKenzie, transmission construction specialist. This work is part of AltaLink’s Avian Protection Plan. You can learn more at: https://bit.ly/4dP4nGU

Today, we hosted our 10th annual Let's Connect event, bringing our customers and industry partners together for an engaging afternoon discussing Alberta’s evolving electricity future. With a future driven by technology, a push to achieve net zero emissions, and the increasing electrification of society, the grid will play a larger role in our lives than ever before. We were proud to welcome some special guest speakers to share their insights on what the future holds. This includes the Hon. Nathan Neudorf Minister of Affordability and Utilities who sat down for a fireside chat with Cayla Saby, AltaLink’s VP of Government Relations & Commercial and Aaron Engen, President and CEO of AESO, who joined AltaLink President and CEO, Gary Hart, for a CEO discussion. Thank you to everyone that came out and participated in the event.
