What does it take to train an AI model? AI models don’t magically work out of the box — they require mindful training to ensure accuracy, fairness, and effectiveness. AI Training Essentials: 🔹Machine Learning (ML): AI learning patterns from data 🔹Deep Learning (DL): Neural networks tackling complex tasks 🔹Reinforcement Learning (RL): AI learning from trial & error 🔹Generative AI (GenAI): AI creating text, images, and more 🔹Large Language Models (LLMs): AI trained on large-scale text data Why Does This Matter: 🔹Properly trained AI models drive better business decisions 🔹They reduce bias, improve accuracy, and ensure ethical AI development 💡 Learn more on our blog: https://lnkd.in/gR2P9tmn

This was a really fun and insightful event! Thank you to Daniel Lee and the CIBC Capital Markets team and to Cory Janssen and AltaML for travelling to #Calgary and spending time with a group that was really keen to hear your perspective. Daniel shared insights on the history, present state and future state of #AI, very useful #data on capex, VC investment and valuations in the AI space and predictions for growth and aggregation at various layers within in the #AI space. Next, I had a chance to speak to Cory - a true leader in the AI space - and pick his brain on a variety of topics. We talked about #AltaML, it’s past and what’s coming up for the organization, opportunities in #agenticAI, key considerations for AI companies in developing revenue models and selling to large enterprise clients, the role of #government in supporting commercialization of AI in #Canada and what #DeepSeek means for the future of AI. Grateful to Daniel, Cory and all of our guests for their time yesterday! #EHGYYC #founders #startups #scaleups #growthcompanies #venturecapital #AI #CIBC #AltaML

New from me: The Canadian government has tasked a group of star AI researchers including Yoshua Bengio, Joëlle Pineau, Jeff Clune and David Duvenaud to provide counsel on AI safety risks. Ottawa's new advisory group includes scientists who've led or worked at leading AI labs at firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google DeepMind, and institutions like the University of Toronto, McGill University and the University of Alberta. The Liberal government has also recast its existing advisory council with more business voices, tapping executives from the likes of Cohere, AltaML, Canadian Tire Corporation and CGI to provide input on how to encourage adoption of the technology and growth in the sector. The splitting of Ottawa's AI advisory body into separate industry- and research-focused groups reflects concurrent push to both capitalize on and regulate the technology. https://lnkd.in/gGPW_XhG

What a tremendous honour to have the opportunity to represent AltaML's experiential learning program at last night's panel discussion at the Canadian Business Leader Award ceremony. This year's ceremony recognized the extraordinary leadership of CN's CEO, Tracy Robinson ICD.D! It was an inspiring, uplifting evening. The student on the panel, Dylan Carrier, has a bright future ahead of him, as do the other student speakers and volunteers. Well done, all!!

Last night, the Alberta School of Business and the University of Alberta had the privilege of honoring Tracy Robinson ICD.D, president and CEO of CN, as the recipient of this year’s Canadian Business Leader Award (CBLA). This annual tradition celebrates the imagination, initiative and persistence that define exceptional business leadership — qualities that Tracy embodies so well. The CBLA is more than an award; it’s a gathering of visionaries, changemakers and future leaders. It was inspiring to be in a room filled with industry trailblazers, reconnecting, exchanging ideas and celebrating the spirit of achievement. Events like this remind us of the power of community, and they align with our new strategic vision — one rooted in uplifting each other and shaping a future where bold leadership thrives. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, the dedicated team who brought this event to life, and our generous sponsors: Edmonton International Airport (YEG), CN, Peace Hills Insurance, and MLT Aikins LLP. We're already looking forward to next year's event!

AI continues to transform businesses, but what risk comes with it? Bias, privacy concerns, and transparency issues just to name a few. Responsible AI (RAI) isn’t optional and the impact of unchecked AI is clear. Some real-world examples of unmonitored AI: 🔹 Facial recognition software has disproportionately misidentified women and people of color, leading to wrongful arrests and ethical concerns. 🔹Amazon’s AI hiring tool trained on past data that favored male candidates and learned to filter out women, ultimately forcing the company to shut it down. 🔹 Privacy violations persist, with companies scraping online images without consent, leading to multi-million-dollar fines under GDPR.
