Senior Engineering Manager leading 40+ ICs and PLs

It is Wednesday my dudes! (Eric Hoff you still loom large) Welcome back to #IansHRManagerCorner, where I answer top questions I get all the time from applicants, #JuniorEngineer's and other folks who contact me. Today the age old question, "IF I DON'T HAVE 'X' TECHNOLOGY, BUT HAVE 'Y,' SHOULD I STILL APPLY?" At Jobber, we are a heavily #Ruby and #Typescript shop, but not everyone works in the same tech stack. You might work in #CSharp or #NodeJS or some other form of backend technology, but how different are those technologies anyways? They have their differences, but more or less the core competencies and concepts that make a good #Engineer a good Engineer don't change as you change the syntax and sugar. For a language like Ruby, a tremendously readable language, applying your skills you've learned in a different language is easy enough, especially with smart search and coding tools cross referencing syntax is easy. So why does Jobber specify Ruby in their job postings? As a hiring Manager, we're trying to look into the future and project the applicants a month, a quarter, a year into the future and see what their impact would be at Jobber once they've joined. It's simply easier to make those projections if we can see evidence or draw direct comparisons to work they'd be doing once they've joined. But that doesn't mean that you should avoid applying at Jobber if you're not a #Ruby or #Typescript expert, in fact just the opposite. For any job posting, Jobber or otherwise, if you have comparable technologies to the ones that they are asking, APPLY. Be ready to answer questions in your language you have experience with, and be clear what you do and don't know. If you really want to commit for an interview or coding test, try to look up tutorials or guides for that language. Try to translate concepts in the language you know into the language that you don't do. Make the work that the hiring manager is doing to compare, contrast and project you against other candidates as easy as possible by as much as possible speaking in their "language," but having hired both native Ruby/TS/React developers as well as developers more versed in other languages, it translates more than you think (heck I'm a C# developer at heart). Differing technologies is not a blocker. Those lists of technologies and requirements are as much a wish list as anything else. Hiring Managers often compromise on one of more of the requirements for an exceptionally strong candidate, but the more you can "speak the language" or show them your skills the better, and it's always easier to do that if you're on a common tech stack. Ruby isn't required at Jobber, but it makes it that much easier to stand apart from the crowd, and in this very crowded job market, every small advantage is advised.

Senior Engineering Manager leading 40+ ICs and PLs

Got another role for you today on Jobber hiring Mondays, this time a #Senior #SWE role on our #DevAcceleration team. One of the hardest things about being a Senior Engineer is not tightening every single loose screw in a setup, not making the #CICD pipelines hum because you have "actual" work to do. But at some point, those small cuts add up into big problems, and what starts as just a small issue for 5, 10, or 20 people, can be a 5% slowdown across hundreds. Our #DevAccel #SWE's focus on that #DeveloperExperience, making sure that our tooling, frameworks, and infrastructure are world class. We've come so far in just a short amount of time having the team, and now we're expanding it out to help even more of our #Engineers. This is a heavy backend, tinkering role, one focused on making our engineers all they can be, and deals a lot with #Observability, #BuildPipelines and #Testing (plus a lot more!). It's one of the coolest jobs we've got at Jobber, and it has some terrifyingly intelligent people working on it, so come join one of the best teams at Jobber as a #SeniorEngineer on our Dev Acceleration team! https://lnkd.in/g45w_qHM

By far the thing I am asked the most is "When is Jobber's 2025 #Intern program launching?" And I am please to say that 🚨 THAT DAY IS TODAY. 🚨 Jobber's 2025 Intern program for #SWE's launches today, and is open for only a limited time. The last few times we've done this, we've had to take the program down due to overwhelming interest, so apply now, and apply early! And please, #JuniorDeveloper's and #JuniorEngineer's have it rough, SHARE this post as wide and as far as you can. We want to get as many people into the funnel as possible. And as always, I remain an actual person actually powered by caffeine, and I'd love to answer your questions in DM's or in the comments. https://lnkd.in/gVu4zVNg

Senior Engineering Manager leading 40+ ICs and PLs

It's Wednesday my dudes, and it's time for the first #IansHRManagerCorner where I answer #Interview or #Hiring questions. I answer a lot the same questions and often just repeat my answers, so each Wednesday, I'm going to post the most common ones here for everyone to see. Today's question will be the ever relevant: "HOW DO I MAKE MY CV STAND OUT/GET NOTICED." Larger or more popular and successful companies can have dozens, hundreds or even thousands of applicants. If you multiply hundreds or thousands of applicants by dozens of postings, it becomes unfeasible to closely read all of those applicantions, so often companies will filter on minimum criteria. But the next step that often happens in the #Hiring process is a scan by either a #HiringManager or #TA person looking for matches with the job description. Therein lies our actual tip for today: MAKE YOUR RESUME/CV READ LIKE THE JOB DESCRIPTION. The words on a JD aren't arbitrary. In addition to Capabilities, Requirements pay close attention to how they describe the words they use. Let's look at a practical example from this posting: http://bit.ly/3DCuG7k "At Jobber, we don’t just build a product - we work on REAL PROBLEMS that HELP PEOPLE IN SMALL BUSINESS to become successful. We are inspired by our company values: BE HUMBLE, BE SUPPORTIVE and GIVE A SHIT, which are not just said but are lived. We work in a collaborative environment where teams make decisions with autonomy and contribute directly to shaping the company’s future. We RELEASE EARLY AND OFTEN while dedicating time to addressing technical debt. We believe in getting instant feedback from our customers and leveraging that to MAKE THEIR LIVES EASIER." I'm picking a Jobber JD to look at because I know them well, and I've picked a few selections from it that stand out to me. In this paragraph, Jobber is telling you their values. So when a TA/HM is scanning your CV they want to see these things in them. They see them in their coworkers and other hires, so you should want them to see them in your CV. When/If you talk with a real person, you should also use their own words back at them as much as possible, sounding like you actually work here. Especially if they explicitly call out values (like BE HUMBLE, BE SUPPORTIVE and GIVE A SHIT) make sure you're checking those boxes in the CV you upload and in conversation, as you can bet their grading you on that. At Jobber all applications are seen by a person, no matter the stage, but companies WILL TELL YOU the words they are looking for as /part of the job description/ so be sure to use those in the CV. LinkedIn has a strict character limit, so ask more in the comments below, or post more questions for future #IansHRManagerCorner's. Be sure to share this post as well so we can reach more people with these answers!
