On August 16th, the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce was hosted by BHE Canada for an overview of both wind and natural gas power generation. 🍃 We had a briefing on the operations, followed by a tour of the 130 MW Rattlesnake Ridge Windfarm near Whitla. After breaking ground 2020, the windfarm was fully commissioned in 2022 and has now been in service for two years. Each of the 26 turbines generates up to 5MW of power with each 71 m blade weighing in at 26 tonnes 😮. For those wondering, an average home would use about 600kWh of power per month with the turbines on this windfarm generating enough energy to supply 78,000 homes. The turbines can generate power with winds as low as three metres per second (about 10 km/h), coming a long way since the first turbines were first built in Alberta in the early 90s. The excellence demonstrated at this facility has made the Rattlesnake Ridge Windfarm a training site for the manufacturer Siemens, bringing trainees and further economic impact to the region. ⚡ Following the windfarm tour, we travelled to the NAT-1 Gas Plant to see BHE Canada’s 20 MW Peaker Plant, which was built in 2016. The plant contains ten 2-MW Cummins engines, capable of coming online when the demand for electricity is high, to help provide reliable energy quickly and seamlessly. 💡 We were pleased to learn about power production and how energy producers work within the Alberta pooled energy market to get power onto the grid and into our homes and businesses. We were pleased to have BHE Canada sponsor our Chamber’s participation in this year’s Alberta Chambers Awards for Commerce Political Action Day.   From their roots in renewable energy, Berkshire Hathaway Energy's portfolio consists of locally managed businesses that share a vision for a secure and sustainable energy future. These businesses deliver low-cost, safe and reliable service each day to more than 12 million customers and end-users throughout the U.S., Great Britain and Alberta, Canada.   BHE Canada was established in 2015 after Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE) made its foray into the Canadian market with the purchase of AltaLink, Alberta’s largest independent transmission provider. BHE Canada is poised for growth in building a greener, more sustainable energy future for all Canadians.   Scott Riddell, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development for Berkshire Hathaway Energy, gave the opening remarks at the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Ministers Dinner and highlighted why BHE invested in Alberta. People in Alberta are those that believe “we know we are going to do well, by doing well.” As Albertans, we have that blend of entrepreneurship, with skill and solving problems with integrity. We have open, fair and transparent market systems and we get it right with policy and regulations that emulate our business community.   BHE is looking for new capital and investment opportunities and want to invest in Alberta, while preserving the culture and enthusiasm of business and growing the business climate.   We are thankful for BHE’s investment and interest in our region in Southeast Alberta and their support of our Chamber of Commerce Aaron Fleming | Lisa Dressler | Berkshire Hathaway Energy | Alberta Chambers of Commerce | BHE Canada
