Black Opportunity Fund is proud to announce that BOF Board member Dr. Bukola Salami, RN, PhD, has been appointed as one of the fifty-six new Members of The Royal Society of Canada | La Société royale du Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists! This nomination recognizes the significant community impact of Dr. Salami’s research, which explores the intersections of immigration, health care, race, and gender.    The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists is Canada’s first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for emerging Canadian intellectual leadership. It forms a fourth entity, alongside the existing three Academies, within the Royal Society of Canada. Members of the College are Canadians or Permanent Residents who are less than fifteen years from the completion of their PhD (or its disciplinary equivalent) and who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments. These mid-career leaders bring a multigenerational capacity to address major challenges and seize new opportunities, including those in emerging fields.   Dr. Salami is proudly blazing a trail for Black Canadians through her groundbreaking work and commitment to creating positive change. Au sujet du programme: Ce programme de huit mois, d'envergure nationale, est conçu pour fournir aux organisations caritatives et à but non lucratif axés sur les Noirs, dirigées par des Noirs et au service des Noirs (N3) un financement et un soutien au développement des capacités qui leur permettent de collaborer, de diriger et de fournir des solutions déterminées par la communauté qui répondent aux priorités et aux besoins de la communauté. Après un long processus d'évaluation, nous avons choisi vingt-cinq organisations N3 pour mettre en œuvre des initiatives dans un ou plusieurs des domaines prioritaires du FPACN. Tous les bénéficiaires recevront 20 000 $ qu'ils pourront allouer selon leurs besoins. Ils recevront également un encadrement de la part de professionnels noirs certifiés, une formation d'experts en génération des revenus et de gestion d'organisations à but non lucratif et un accès à des ressources pour créer des organisations saines, adaptables et réceptives. Le FPACN est heureux de s'associer au Black Canadian Fundraisers' Collective (BCFC), Imagine Canada, Management Advisory Services (MAS), et International Coaching Federation. Ce programme est rendu possible grâce aux engagements de la Promesse Prêts à agir TD Canada et la Fondation RBC. En outre, grâce à notre partenariat avec le BCFC, un financement supplémentaire du programme régional a été obtenu auprès de partenaires philanthropiques – Halifax United Way Inc et The Toronto Foundation – afin de prioriser la participation de quinze organisations N3 de trois communautés dans le cadre du projet pilote.

We are excited to shine a spotlight on the incredible work happening across the provinces of Western Canada by the recipients of the BCFC + BOF B3 Capacity Development Program. This week, meet the organizations from this region, where our grant recipients are impacting their communities. We’re proud to support these projects that drive change! Stay tuned each week as we continue to highlight the exceptional efforts of the recipients from provinces across the country and their contributions coast-to-coast. About the program: This 8-month program, with a national scope, is designed to provide Black-focused, Black-led, Black-serving (B3s) non-profits & charities with funding and capacity development support that positions them to collaborate, lead and deliver community-determined solutions that effectively address identified community priorities and needs. After an extensive evaluation process, we have selected twenty-five B3 organizations from across Canada that deliver initiatives in one or more of BOF’s priority areas. All recipients will receive $20,000 in funding to allocate according to their needs. Recipients will also receive coaching from certified Black professionals, expert training in revenue generation and non-profit management, and access to curated resources for building healthy, adaptable, and community-responsive organizations. BOF is pleased to partner with Black Canadian Fundraisers' Collective’ (BCFC) and delivery partners Imagine Canada, Management Advisory and Consulting (MAS), & the International Coaching Federation, Vancouver Chapter. This program is made possible through funding commitments from TD Ready Commitment and the RBC Foundation. On September 4th, 2024, the Black Opportunity Fund in partnership with The Albany Club presents a compelling panel discussion as part of our Capitalism, Diversity & Inclusion Series: Black on Bay. This session will focus on "Celebrating Success and Overcoming Challenges," featuring influential Black leaders from Bay Street who will share insights into their professional journeys. Despite notable strides in diversity and inclusion initiatives, Black representation in executive roles remains scarce, and many Black professionals still experience cultural isolation and subtle forms of racism in their careers. The event presents an opportunity to hear from a passionate group of Black Bay Street leaders as they share their career journeys, the obstacles they've overcome, and the ongoing challenges that remain in the financial services sector. Are you curious about how people land job opportunities and build successful careers through their social networks? We invite you to participate in our research study “Assessing Social Capital”! We're conducting groundbreaking research to explore how racialized peoples in Canada access opportunities to achieve their career ambitions. This first-ever longitudinal survey aims to establish how social capital is defined, attained, and maintained by racialized individuals, particularly Black Canadians. Black Opportunity Fund is excited to partner with the Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora, along with York University School of Continuing Studies, Coalition of Innovation Leaders Against Racism (CILAR) and York TD Community Engagement Centre for this study. Our goal is for the government and organizations to use this data to address current needs, but also inform culturally relevant future supports and address systemic barriers in accessing social mobility. Le Jour de l'émancipation commémore l'abolition de l'esclavage des Africains dans l'Empire britannique en 1833 et rend hommage à la résilience et au courage des Africains qui ont lutté sans relâche pendant deux siècles pour leur liberté. En 1793, un Noir nommé Peter Martin a demandé au gouverneur Simcoe du Haut-Canada (aujourd'hui Ontario, Canada) d'agir contre un propriétaire d'esclaves canadien qui avait violemment transporté Chloe Cooley, une Canadienne noire réduite en esclavage, aux États-Unis pour y être vendue. À l'époque, l'esclavage était une réalité au Canada depuis près de 250 ans.   Le cas de Chloe Cooley a conduit Lord Simcoe à introduire en 1793 « The Act to Limit Slavery », la première loi anti-esclavagiste de l'Empire britannique. De nombreux membres de l'assemblée législative du Haut-Canada s'opposent au désir de Simcoe d'abolir l'esclavage au Canada, car ils possèdent eux-mêmes des esclaves. La loi qui en résulte est un compromis qui permet aux propriétaires d'esclaves de conserver leur main-d'œuvre qui restera en esclavage jusqu'à leur mort. Ils ne sont pas autorisés à acheter de nouveaux esclaves africains, et les enfants de femmes africaines nées après l'adoption de la loi deviennent libres à l'âge de 25 ans. Cette législation a conduit à la Slavery Abolition Act, qui est officiellement entrée en vigueur le 1er août 1834, catalysée par la crainte de soulèvements de plus en plus violents.   Après l'abolition de l'esclavage dans l'Empire britannique, la Grande-Bretagne a utilisé un prêt de 15 millions £ représentant environ 40 % de son budget pour payer des réparations aux anciens propriétaires d'esclaves. La Banque d'Angleterre n'a fini de rembourser ce prêt qu'en 2015. Cela signifie que les citoyens britanniques vivants, y compris les descendants d'esclaves africains, ont, sans le savoir, contribué à payer les réparations.   Le 1er août est aujourd'hui reconnu comme le « Jour de l'émancipation ». Le premier lundi du mois d'août est un jour férié en Ontario, connu sous le nom de Simcoe Day, en reconnaissance de Lord Simcoe. Depuis 1967, le Caribana Festival de Toronto a lieu lors de la longue fin de semaine du mois d'août, en reconnaissance de l'importance du Jour de l'émancipation et du Simcoe Day pour les communautés caribéennes et afro-canadiennes. Le 24 mars 2021, le Parlement canadien a désigné à l'unanimité le 1er août comme le Jour de l'émancipation. Il s’agit d’un rappel crucial de la résilience des personnes d'ascendance africaine tout au long de l'histoire, des progrès accomplis et du travail qui reste à faire pour perturber le racisme anti-Noir, qui reste un problème mondial.
