We unite businesses, government, and NGOs to achieve a #circulareconomy for plastics, so plastics never become waste

About us

Launched in 2021, the Canada Plastics Pact is part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s growing global Plastics Pact Network and is one of Generate Canada’s Solution Spaces. In partnership with the Smart Prosperity Institute, Generate Canada connects problem-solvers to tackle complex challenges at the heart of environment, economy, and society. By uniting businesses, government, and non-profits, we are working to achieve a circular economy for plastics in Canada. Through an industry-led, cross-value chain, collaborative effort, the CPP will ensure that plastics stay in the economy and out of the environment. Together, we will eliminate the plastic we don’t need and innovate towards new business models, collection systems, materials, and technologies to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. • Plastic waste is a challenge that demands urgent action and collaboration in Canada. CPP’s Director of Strategic Initiatives, Meg O'Shea had the opportunity to represent the Canada Plastics Pact (CPP) at two key events in Alberta on March 10 & 11, 2025: the Recycling Council of Alberta’s Explore Circular Economy conference on waste-to-energy in a circular economy and the 3rd Annual Alberta Circular Plastics Day hosted by the Alberta Plastics Recycling Association. At the APRA conference, CPP joined a panel with Ryan Parmenter from Environment and Climate Change Canada and Peter Mirtchev from the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) to discuss the Federal Plastics Registry, Extended Producer Responsibility, and Canada’s role in tackling plastic waste on a global scale. Key takeaways from CPP: ▪️ The Plastics Pact Network is driving global progress, accelerating recycling efforts and reducing plastic waste through shared commitments and collaboration. ▪️ The importance of setting realistic goals in light of Bill C-59 and its potential impact on environmental claims, but still maintaining ambition.  ▪️ Continued efforts to drive meaningful change through collaboration, with an emphasis on better data collection and leveraging insights for more informed decision-making. It was great to connect with some of our Partner and others working to advance a zero plastic waste economy in Canada! Did you attend the conference? What were your key takeaways?

  • Collaboration drives impact, and we were excited to share how the Canada Plastics Pact is working with its Partners to scale solutions at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Plastics Workshop in Brussels on February 26, 2025, where Senior Project Manager Shay Fladager joined 100+ leaders for a three day workshop focused on "On the Ground Action." We were joined by other Plastics Pacts, including the South African Plastics Pact, Chilean Plastics Pact, US Plastics Pact, The Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Islands Plastics Pact (ANZPAC), WRAP, Polish Plastics Pact, India Plastics Pact, and Kenya Plastics Pact, to highlight our progress in driving change across our respective regions. We had the opportunity to present our Reuse Accelerator, an initiative partially funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada, designed to support the scaling of two proven reuse/refill applications and address the knowledge and infrastructure gaps hindering the growth of returnable and refillable packaging systems in Canada. We spotlighted our recipients of the initiative, Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC), EcoTank Canada, and Friendlier, who are working to scale reuse/refill solutions across Canada and tackle single-use plastic waste. • What happens when the Plastics Pact Network comes together in person? We collaborate, exchange knowledge, and build the momentum needed for systemic change toward a #circulareconomy for #plastics around the globe! 🤝The Plastics Pact Network, convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WRAP, is driving global efforts to eliminate plastic waste and pollution. We recognize that the scale of change needed is massive, but we’re working to accelerate that change collectively. In six years, Plastics Pacts have eliminated over 33 billion problematic/single-use items, avoiding 2.2 million tonnes of virgin plastic. 👥CPP Managing Director Cher Mereweather and Director of Strategic Initiatives Meg O'Shea joined representatives from The Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Islands Plastics Pact (ANZPAC), Circula el Plástico, Colombia, Kenya Plastics Pact, Pacto de Plásticos México, Polish Plastics Pact, Pacto Português para os Plásticos, South African Plastics Pact, US Plastics Pact, and WRAP (UK) in late January 2025 for knowledge-sharing workshops focused on breaking down barriers, strengthening International and North American collaboration, and scaling circular plastics solutions. At the workshop, we showcased key initiatives from the Canada Plastics Pact over the past year: ✅ CPP Reuse Accelerator, partially funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), which supports the scaling of two proven reuse/ refill applications and aims to address knowledge and infrastructure gaps that are hindering scaling returnable or refillable packaging systems in Canada. (Watch the Reuse Accelerator videos on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eecQCKPU) ✅ Film & Flex Knowledge Series – A collaborative series of technical workshops co-hosted by the CPP and US Plastics Pact focused on identifying innovative circular pathways for flexible packaging and films. The series aimed to address technical challenges and present solutions for converting to mono-material formats. ⭐Learn more about these initiatives by reading our 2023-34 Impact Report: https://lnkd.in/e2xyZpBC Two weeks after the Plastics Pact Network Connect workshop in Mexico City, the impact of those conversations is already taking shape. As the Pacts continue to align our efforts with the Global Commitment beyond 2025 and tailor global strategies to local needs, the Plastics Pact Network is creating tangible, scalable progress on a global scale. Stay tuned for more progress on our collective work!
