Ontario is reindustrializing after two lost decades. While U.S. manufacturing output grew by 3% between 2002 and 2022, Ontario saw a 14% decline. In that same period, Ontario’s manufacturing exports increased at a slower rate than all provinces, apart from Prince Edward Island. To meet the 2035 vision set by Ontario’s Advanced Manufacturing Council, the government’s objective should be to grow our manufacturing sector’s footprint to new production heights. This means increasing manufacturing’s contribution to Ontario’s economy (real GDP) by 20% by 2035. Will Ontario be up to the challenge?
