Today I was pleased to announce the start of an exciting new chapter for our city with the first project approved under our Downtown Calgary Demolition Incentive Program. This bold initiative will breathe new life into our downtown by replacing long-vacant buildings with much-needed housing and retail space. Our investment in this program ensures that a site like this one — The Phillips Building on 4 Avenue SW, spanning between 5 and 6 Street SW — once plagued by break-ins and vandalism will be transformed into a safe, lively space that strengthens our downtown community. With over $100 million in private investment, this inaugural project showcases the confidence developers like Cantiro have in Calgary’s future. This project is more than just development — it’s a testament to the success of our downtown revitalization strategy. Thank you to Cantiro for their vision and to all Calgarians for your continued support as we work together to build a brighter, safer, and more dynamic downtown.

Edmonton’s residential construction industry has a new voice! Going forward, BILD Edmonton Metro, created by the recent merger of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association-Edmonton Region and the Urban Development Institute Edmonton Metro, will serve as the unified voice and expert resource for the real estate development industry in the Edmonton metropolitan region. “As one organization, home builders, developers, renovators, financial and professional service organizations, trade contractors, and manufacturers and suppliers will work collaboratively to shape and build sustainable and prosperous communities throughout the region,” said Katrina Rowe, chair of BILD Edmonton Metro’s transition board and President of Cantiro Communities. What goes into bringing on a new community? In this Edmonton Journal piece, our CEO, Kalen Anderson, Cantiro's Jodie Wacko, and Brookfield Residential's Michael Kohl, dig into the planning and development details that go into building homes and shaping communities for everyone. “It’s the developer who then makes it come to life,” said Kalen Anderson, noting developers and homebuilders play a key part in growing the city. And properly growing the city is important, added Anderson as she points out there’s already a plan in place to deal with greater Edmonton expecting to hit a population of two million. “Planning is just that, planning for the future so you’re ready to execute,” said Jodie Wacko, adding it’s just as important to be ready to pivot. What you based a decision on years back, he said, may need to be changed to adjust to current market conditions, changing demographics, and changing demands for what homebuyers want in their homes. “You have to think about not only who is living in your communities now but also who is going to be living in your communities in the future, and what’s important to them from their sense of community," said Michael Kohl. https://lnkd.in/gyah6_-Q
