  • Employers often ask Co-operative Education how to onboard a new co-op student. The support that a student receives in the first two weeks sets the stage for a positive experience, for both the employer and the student. Here are three of our top tips for employers: ✅Remind your student to always have a notebook and pen with them. Coach them to take plenty of notes – it's easy to forget things when you’re absorbing a lot of new information and meeting new people. ✅Encourage a beginner’s mindset. Provide explanations of new terms and acronyms – students may be hesitant to ask! ✅Whether they work remotely or at the office, be sure they have a clear understanding of the expectations for when to start and leave work. If there is flexibility, clearly define the boundaries. Our Supervisor First Meeting Guide is an excellent resource to start things off right with your student. Contact co-op@carleton.ca if you’d like a copy. Employers, are there particular strategies you’ve found useful during the first couple of weeks? Co-op students, what helpful tips have you received from your supervisors when onboarding?
