The remnants of Hurricane Debby that travelled across southern Quebec on August 9 and 10 are estimated to have caused nearly $2.5 billion in insured damage, according to initial estimates from Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. (CatIQ). This flood event now ranks as the costliest insured event in Quebec’s history, even surpassing the 1998 ice storm. #QCPoli #CDNPoli
2024 is shaping up to a be a massive year for insured losses in Canada.
A record-breaking hailstorm that hit the Calgary area in early August resulted in nearly $2.8 billion in insured losses, according to initial estimates from Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. (CatIQ). This hailstorm is the second-costliest event in Canada's history, following the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire. With yet another record-setting summer for insured losses due to severe weather, these losses will place pressure on insurance premiums moving forward. #ABPoli

This summer’s devastating wildfire in the Municipality of Jasper and Jasper National Park resulted in over $880 million in insured damage, according to initial estimates from Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. (CatIQ). The sudden and intense wildfire, which began on July 22, damaged or destroyed a third of the community, making it the second most expensive wildfire in Alberta’s history in insured losses. #ABPoli

The YE 2023 Canadian Industry Exposure Database (IED) is out!
CatIQ is pleased to announce the release of the annual update of its Canadian insurance Industry Exposure Database (IED). In total, the new CatIQ IED 2024 includes detailed sums insured exposed to natural perils of CAD 19 trillion of property assets. The year-on-year increase in sums insured is 11.3% in the Canadian market which is in line with the increase in sums insured observed by PERILS AG in many European markets in its latest IED update. CatIQ has today disclosed its final industry loss estimate for the #derecho that impacted southern Ontario and Quebec in May, 2022. In its sixth loss report, CatIQ estimates the event has cost the insurance industry approx. CAD 1.2B. This figure is based on property loss data collected from affected insurers. Detailed loss information, including the loss footprint and FSA-level loss data (for organizations with access), is available to subscribers via the CatIQ Platform.
The Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Congress begins on Monday June 3, and the first day will wrap up with a FREE public lecture [in English] hosted by Dr. L. Ruby Leung from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Dr. Leung will be speaking on #Extreme Weather Events and their Future Changes: "Comparing 2000-2019 with 1980-1999, extreme temperature and #flood events have more than doubled globally while the number of disastrous #storms and #droughts has increased by 30-50%. While the nonlinear increase in latent energy with warmer surface air temperature may explain the global increasing trends in weather extremes, credible projections of the regional changes in extreme events remain challenging."
