On October 10, we observe World Mental Health Day, a time to raise awareness and support mental health worldwide. This year’s theme, 'Mental Health at Work,' reminds us of the importance of well-being in the workplace. At the City of Surrey, we strive to create a healthy and safe workplace where our staff can thrive. This includes ensuring that our staff have access to resources like the City's Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), webinars that focus on mental health and other programs that support overall wellness.

The official opening of Strawberry Hill Community Hall in Newton is coming up! This rehabilitated facility located on the perimeter of R.A. Nicholson Park replaces the historic Strawberry Hill Hall and will be home to a new childcare service for the community. Strawberry Hill Community Hall is one of the projects that Carlos, the City’s Acting Infrastructure Projects Manager was responsible for coordinating. He used his architectural background and project management expertise to collaborate with other City teams, structural design teams and contractors to reimagine the building and turn it into a modern facility that will benefit the community for many years to come. Carlos is a part of a skilled Civic Facilities team that ensures more than 130 civic buildings are up to date, and also coordinates the creation of more buildings each year. With the City’s continuous growth, Carlos and the Civic Facilities team are working hard to create and maintain our facilities. They are responsible for rehabilitating, renovating, repairing, and maintaining the City’s buildings, including preventative maintenance, energy management, and upgrades to mechanical systems and programs. Some of the upcoming projects our Civic Facilities team are working on include the North Surrey Indigenous Cultural Centre and the O’Siem Village Childcare facility. Like Carlos and our Civic Facilities team, you can make a direct impact to our growing city. Start your search for a job opportunity at the City of Surrey: www.surrey.ca/careers.

It’s the little things that make a big difference. A Surrey Bylaw Officer was approached by two kids in a park with a broken bike—their chain was stuck! While the Officer is not exactly a bike repair pro, he grabbed his trusty bylaw multi-tool, threw on some gloves, and gave it a go. With a little effort, he managed to get the bike working again! The kids were pretty thankful and happily rode off. It was a nice little surprise moment for all.

“I had worked 14 years at my previous employer before joining the City of Surrey. After so many years, I felt it was time for a career move. Getting out there was intimidating, so I spent a lot of time preparing to my best foot forward. I looked at job opportunities and researched the organizations and tailored my applications for the job I was applying for. When the opportunity came up for an Employee Engagement Specialist at the City of Surrey, I jumped on it. At the interview stage, I looked up the interview panel on LinkedIn and reviewed the City’s website to help me understand the organization. It’s been just over a year and I absolutely love what I do – helping others love where we work!” Camille is the City’s Employee Engagement Specialist, focusing on providing employee experiences that keep our staff engaged in providing service excellence to our citizens and driving our Mayor & Council’s key priorities forward. Like Camille, you can make an impact in our community. Find out more about our jobs at www.surrey.ca/careers.

“Always ask questions.” It’s a lesson that Zoe has taken to heart, especially in her role as a Senior Functional Applications Analyst, in the Planning & Development department at the City of Surrey. “I collaborate with individuals from various functions who provide valuable input for the work I do. It is important to recognize the uniqueness between different teams to understand their opportunities for enhancement. This way, I can ensure our business processes are aligned while designing solutions that can fit our needs.” Zoe’s main role is to be a bridge between the Planning & Development department and the City’s IT team, ensuring that her department’s needs are met in project implementations. She plays a pivotal part in delivering tools like the Citizen Portal that enable businesses and residents to submit and manage their permits online; and more recently, enabling them to submit inspection requests. How does Zoe find success in her work? She enjoys being a part of the discussions that ultimately result in solutions. She takes her time to talk to stakeholders, analyze requirements and evaluate solutions before a decision is made improve business processes. Armed with a new Climate Change Action Strategy (CCAS), the City of Surrey aims to achieve a 45% reduction in Surrey's community greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions before 2050. Helping to coordinate the City’s climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts is our Climate Action Planner, Craig. In his role, Craig collaborates with staff across the City to deliver on important climate change initiatives. A recent collaboration brought about Surrey’s Climate Action Tracker, an online tool that showcases what the City is doing to address climate change and put CCAS into action. You can check it out at https://lnkd.in/gJhnFekd. With Surrey set to become the most populated city in BC, the work that staff like Craig do can make a significant impact, not only within Surrey, but in the province as well.
