📣 Another step forward in brain injury prevention in Canada   Last week, we celebrated Rowan's Law Day in Ontario, where school children heard Rowan's story and learned the importance of properly recognizing and treating brain injuries.   Tomorrow, I will appear before the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Health to support Bill C-277, which seeks to establish a national strategy on brain injuries. Rowan’s legacy continues to drive change, and Bill C-277 represents another major step forward. 🧠   Kathleen, Rowan’s mother, shared with me how she believes "Rowan has fulfilled her dream of helping children because Rowan's Law has saved lives." Canada’s Indigenous communities have lower access to health care services, and face discrimination when they do access care. That means, Indigenous athletes, Veterans, and community members, who may face symptoms associated with brain injuries, could go completely unnoticed. This can result in prolonged symptoms, which can lead to long-lasting, negative health outcomes. On Truth and Reconciliation Day, our team at CLFC is reminded of former Indigenous NHL Hockey player Chris Simon. Originally from Wawa, Ontario, Chris passed away this year. His family suspects that his history of brain injuries contributed to his early death. Athletes like Chris are the reason CLFC supports the Team Up Initiative for all kids. Most recently, Kalley Armstrong and the OSEG Foundation hosted Indigenous youth for a Team Up camp in Ottawa. This important work helps ensure that Indigenous youth have equal access to critical education about their brain health. Rowan Stringer passed away from Second Impact Syndrome at the age of 17. In her honour, Ontario deemed today Rowan’s Law Day to raise awareness of the signs of concussion.. To date, Ontario is the only province to adopt Rowan’s Law, leading the way in athlete safety in Canada. “I believe Rowan’s Law is the international gold standard of concussion legislation. This law should now be emulated by federal, provincial and territorial governments across Canada,” said Gordon Stringer. A special thanks to Minister Neil Lumsden and all the partners working tirelessly to ensure concussion protocols are top of mind. Together, we are shaping a safer future for athletes across Ontario. 🧠 Now it’s time for the rest of Canada to follow suit. After months of filming and research, our new documentary, MY BRAIN ON SPORTS, met its first audience at last night’s first official screening. Filled with life changing testimony that demonstrates the real impacts of contact sport on brain development, this documentary is ready to change the way the world sees concussions and CTE. Our first screening was met with inspiration and a shared commitment to advancing concussion research.
