Cultural sensitivity is a business imperative. Writer Zephaniah Wong shares what all stakeholders could have done differently and why, and what can we all learn from what has unfolded from the #Bobba #DragonsDen incident. With his experience in business operations and people management, he brings us a new look at a repeated problem in cultural appropriation in business and solutions to move forward. Thanks Simu Liu for being a voice to encourage others to look further at how they're doing business without harm. Edited by Samson Chan, MPH/JD/PMBA/CIPP-C and Pearl Zhou, with special support from Vivian Dang. #Bobba #DragonsDen Manjit Minhas CBC/Radio-Canada Dragons' Den Canada Shark Tank ABC #culturalappropriation CTV News Elimin8Hate Natasha Jung

On a recent trip to California, we stopped by the office of Wong Fu Productions! We are to be in a time and space where we have pioneers of Asian American stories in film still working hard for representation and authentic narratives, challenging norms and making us the main characters in our own stories. They’ve been instrumental in developing the careers of well-known names in the industry and have featured in their films and skits Asian actors who have since been in some of the most iconic filmmaking and television enterprises. Check out some links in the comments for more highlights of our visit and some articles we’ve published about those who have been in the Wong Fu Productions universe. #WongFuProductions #asianamericanstories #asiandiasporavoices #multiculturalmarketing Marvel Entertainment Marvel Studios DC Comics Netflix HBO Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios Paramount+ Paramount Pictures Hulu Disney Advertising Benson Quach Wesley Chan Philip Wang #TedFu

For those who haven't seen this episode of Dragon's Den, you should. Appreciating and learning from other cultures to innovate should be welcomed. That's how we move forward and do better as a collective. That's how we don't stay ignorant, uninformed and uncultured. But this episode and the atrocity displayed aren't about that. It's literally stealing another culture's good, claiming ownership without any understanding of the original, not even innovating and pretending it's innovative, and the worst part is putting the original down with racist remarks and condescending attitude that somehow it's inferior and suspicious and shamelessly claim their copy is somehow better. The ignorance and audacity displayed were ridiculous and embarrassing. For those who defend the cultural appropriation that Asians get inspiration from Western culture too, this isn't inspiration. This isn't even a respectful new take on the original with their own cultural elements. THIS IS THEFT AND THEY DO SO BY STEREOTYPICALLY DISPARAGING ANOTHER CULTURE TO UPLIFT THEIR OWN PRODUCT THAT'S NOT EVEN INNOVATIVE. Adding an extra "b" to Boba doesn't make it new. None of this is ok and shame on the other dragons for dismissing the issues. No one is suggesting that only Asians can make Asian cultural products by the way. All the comments in OP's post highlighting the existence of Western products and influence in Asia as some sort of defensive argument are clearly missing the point. There's plenty of fusion restaurants that combine different cultural flavours to have a new take, fashion brands that mix and match different cultural elements etc. That's not the same as pretending you're innovating something that already exists in that culture and claiming it as your own, and you don't normally see the above examples disparaging the original just to claim their versions to be superior. If an Asian restaurant makes the same remarks and claims ownership over a pasta dish that it did not actually invent, pretty damn sure the Italian community would flip too. We can all do better to learn from and appreciate each other's culture, and the first step is to acknowledge and stop this nonsense. This is a repeated pattern. Cold Tea Collective published an article (written by Vivian Dang and edited by Zephaniah Wong) on a similar issue years back involving an American company creating and claiming that their Mahjong version is better with minimal understanding of the original - read here https://lnkd.in/guEZWFH9. At least the Mahjong Line team publicly apologized and reframed their mission statement and value proposition. Somehow here Simu had to do PR damage control for everyone else. Thank you Simu Liu for setting these people straight without hesitation and mincing words, and Dave Lu for the post. Should the founders of Bobba be harassed and threatened because of this? Of course not. Should they be criticized? Absolutely. #diversity #asian #culture #appropriation #business

Simu Liu is a real life super hero. This video clip of Dragon’s Den (Canada’s Shark Tank) has been going viral this week. In it, a pair of white Canadian founders were pitching Bobba, a boba beverage company. Simu challenged the cultural appropriation of a famously Asian drink and the erasure of anything about it being Asian whatsoever. It is a Taiwanese invention that has existed for decades and is popular around the world. This team is trying to capitalizing on it by whitewashing it to make it “acceptable” to the masses. This isn’t new to Asians, because we’ve heard it all before. A white team will say they’re making something Asian better or healthier, insinuating that our products or creations are inherently cheaper, worse, or unhealthy. These are all racist stereotypes perpetuated by the very people that want to make their own versions and capitalize on it. Did you know that PF Chang’s was started by a white man named Paul Fleming (the PF) in Scottsdale, AZ? He also spun off the fast casual Pei Wei Asian Diner. He sold PF Chang’s for $1.1B in 2012. A white woman in Oregon started Breakfast Cure, an “improved” congee brand. Three white women in Dallas, redesigned a mahjong set saying the game needed a “respectful reset” and charged $425. And many of us remember Lucky Lee’s, a short-lived “Chinese” restaurant in New York opened by Arielle Haspel, a nutritionist that marketed itself as “clean Chinese food.” https://lnkd.in/gunk4ACB https://lnkd.in/gD7fZr5g https://lnkd.in/gDJMEvht It’s not just about stealing and capitalizing on other cultures. It’s disrespecting them by saying they can be made better by a non-Asian. This is reminiscent of arrogant colonialists thinking they could “civilize” and make other countries “better.” It is infuriating that these other judges are so dismissive of Simu’s valid concerns that he articulated so well. But we’re not surprised by this and are very familiar with this type of response. It’s disappointing that the fellow Asian woman on the panel is not an ally, but instead offers to invest as if she wants the approval of the others. Meanwhile, companies like Twrl Milk Tea started by a Taiwanese and Chinese all-female team (Pauline Ang and Olivia Chen) have been selling their boba products at Whole Foods, Sprouts and other stores around the country. Would the judges on Dragon’s Den have been as interested in investing in their authentic company? Probably not, but maybe Simu will. We all just want a fair shot. Here’s a thoughtful response from Olivia Chen: https://lnkd.in/gHhgNtcR

Cold Tea Collective’s mission is to empower the next generation of the Asian diaspora to live their most authentic and fulfilled lives through storytelling. On this Canadian Thanksgiving, I want to thank anyone who has ever read, listened to or watched any of our content. To those who have volunteered, made a donation, shared, referred, and trusted us to be part of bringing their stories to life, thank you 💛 Last week was my second time travelling to New York for Advertising Week, second Gold Forum for Gold House, and the one year anniversary of the launch of the Gold House “Gold Publishers” and Kargo “AAPI Multicultural Content Amplifier” Programs with the support of our partner Discover Financial Services. Although our friends at The Lounge Booth captured all smiles in these photos, what is not pictured are the unexpected tears I had not long before. Hearing the stories and perspectives from Laurie Lam, Susie Nam, Rachana Kumar and Versha Sharma at the “Gold Women’s Breakfast”, coupled with the warm and welcoming smiles and introductions between the group of Asian women made it a safe space for the tears to flow. How special it was to be in a space where we were all celebrated and empowered to be our authentic selves without having to code-switch or over-explain; we could just, be. At Advertising Week, a fellow attendee saw “Cold Tea Collective” on my name tag and stopped me. She told me she was a mixed-race Indonesian creative and how she’s been reading us for years. I asked if I could give her a hug and some stickers 😂🥲🥹. 8️⃣ When we first started publishing stories for us and by us nearly eight years ago, I knew that the power of authentic storytelling could transcend artificial limitations of human connection, but I continue to be amazed at and feel immense gratitude for how far, wide and deep it would connect all of us. I am grateful for the journey to date and excited to see where we will go. #gratitude #CanadianThanksgiving #thankful

Hello, New York! We're at Advertising Week in the Big Apple 🍎 with fellow AAPI independently-owned media. Here are some highlights from half-way through the conference, hearing from industry leaders Helen Lin, Bing Chen, Olympic Medal Winner #SuniLee, Alexander Dao, Vivian Tu and Laurie Lam. - Consumers are more likely to buy from brands who work with diverse creators and buy more from brands who are supporting diverse creators. - Helen Lin - On the future of creators and brands: we will see more creator-led brands that emerge from building audiences first and responding to audience needs before creating products and launching them. - Vivian Tu - The best performing ads are the ones that serve audiences rather than just selling to them. - Vivian Tu - Viral is not the goal post, it’s about getting brand love and fan love along the way. - Laurie Lam Stay tuned for more highlights from our week in New York. Thank you to our partners Kargo, Discover Financial Services and Gold House for supporting our trip here to learn about the future of advertising. If you'd like to connect with Cold Tea Collective about advertising and partnership opportunities, please reach out to Natasha Jung. #AdvertisingWeekNewYork #AWNY #AdWeek #AdvertisingProfessional #AdvertisingPro #AdvertisingInsights
