When women lead, entire communities thrive. In today’s world of increasing disasters and the growing need for complex humanitarian aid, having women in leadership roles becomes even more valuable. Often, women are the ones with the closest ties to their community, bridging gaps and ensuring that girls, women and other at-risk people – who might otherwise have been unreachable or overlooked – have access to the support they need through allyship and a community-first approach. In Morocco’s Chichaoua province, local female Red Crescent staff and volunteers like Maryam, a PMER/IM Officer with the Moroccan Red Crescent, are at the forefront of efforts to assist those impacted by the devastating earthquake that struck the region in 2023. They are teaching volunteers how to install transitional shelter units, working closely within the community, and using their deep cultural knowledge and multilingual skills, to deliver essential aid. With the support of Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, the Canadian Red Cross helped provide essential relief, including support to build 525 transitional shelter units, which offer security and stability for families who lost everything. Together, the Red Cross is helping to #AccelerateAction and support women across the world in such spaces. Watch this video to see Maryam share how these shelters are transforming lives and creating aspirations. #IWD2025

Welcome home, Phil and Sue! 🏠👏 Nearly two years ago, Sue and Phil lost their home of over ten years due to the Upper Tantallon Wildfires in Nova Scotia. Working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia and with the support of volunteers and generous donors, we were able to help Phil and Sue rebuild after more than a year of being displaced. Recently, we joined them to welcome Sue and Phil back to their community and hand over the keys to their newly reconstructed home. The Canadian Red Cross continues to support those impacted by the 2023 wildfires in Nova Scotia as they work through their recovery.

Photo of the Week: On November 25, 2024, torrential rains in several regions of #Gabon caused flooding that affected over 13,000 people. The frequency and intensity of rain in these areas has been significantly higher than normal, causing rivers and streams to overflow their banks. The Gabonese Red Cross Society has helped those impacted by the floods by providing mental health and wellbeing support to affected families and assisting with the evacuation of people affected. Their work is being supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) to help meet the needs of those impacted. Through the Emergency Disaster Assistance Fund and DREF, the Government of Canada (Affaires mondiales Canada | Global Affairs Canada) is supporting the Gabonese Red Cross as they continue with their response efforts. The destruction in northern Gaza is immense. Very few homes remain. Apartment buildings that still stand are remnants of the vibrant refuge they once provided families. Large piles of broken concrete, twisted rebar and debris line the streets. People returning here are setting up tents wherever they can find space – even if that space is atop a hollowed out building. Others use tarps to create dividers where walls once stood. Familiar landmarks are gone. Neighbourhoods are unrecognizable. Essential services are barely functioning. There is little fuel or drinkable water. The road to recovery will be a long one. But the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) is there, on the ground, delivering supplies like water and hygiene kits, and providing much needed health care – for the body and the mind. The needs are immense and it will take a collective effort – and years - to rebuild. The Canadian Red Cross continues to support PRCS in their efforts.
