Conserving Canadian wetlands and other natural spaces for waterfowl, wildlife, and people for more than 80 years
About us
Wetlands are one of the most important ecosystems on the planet. Unfortunately, up to 70 per cent of wetlands have been lost in settled areas of Canada. More are lost every day. Wetlands do many important jobs for us. They help clean our water. They are home to hundreds of species of wildlife. They protect our communities from flooding and droughts. They store carbon, helping in the fight against climate change. Since 1938, we have been working hard to save Canada’s wetlands. Backed by sound science, we have what it takes to make a real difference. It’s why we’re leading the way in wetland conservation. We know what needs to be done. We know how to do it. Now, more than ever, we need your help.

Meet the 2024-2026 #DUCYouthAdvisoryCouncil! ➡️ Jaron Scribner 📍 Alberta/Saskatchewan Jaron Scribner aspires to represent Canada’s prairies on DUC’s youth advisory council. Jaron grew up just outside of Coronation, Alta., on a small farm, where he learned how to hunt with his father. He then spent time in Maple Creek, Sask., his family’s hometown, before moving to Lethbridge, Alta., for school. Jaron holds a diploma in Natural Resource Compliance and is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Ecosystem Management degree program at Lethbridge Polytechnic. This summer, Jaron worked with DUC as a conservation technician in Alberta and hopes to one day work for DUC as a biologist. Outside of school and work, Jaron can be found waterfowl hunting, ice fishing, or attending a DUC volunteer chapter meeting. Jaron has been involved with DUC’s Lethbridge Polytechnic (formerly Lethbridge College) Student Chapter, where he was elected and served as treasurer for two years, then as president of the chapter and member of DUC’s Alberta Provincial Council. Being part of this chapter has given Jaron insight into the importance of youth engagement and volunteerism. Jaron is also active in many extracurricular activities such as baseball, hockey, curling and 4-H. ⭐ Over the next two years on the council, Jaron hopes to gain knowledge and share experiences to help Canada’s youth become more involved with DUC and help build a new generation of conservation leaders. #DucksUnlimitedCanada #YouthAdvisoryCouncil #ConservationLeadership #FutureOfNature

Meet the 2024-2026 #DUCYouthAdvisoryCouncil! ➡️ Fares Mandour 📍 Alberta Fares Mandour is in his first year of an M.Sc. in water and land resources at the University of Alberta. His research focuses on the impact that permafrost thaw and wildfires have on water quality in northern communities, with a specific interest in mercury and methylmercury. Fares’ study areas are the Hay River watershed in northwestern Alberta and the southern Northwest Territories, and the Dehcho (Mackenzie River) Region in the southern Northwest Territories, so he spends quite a bit of time up north. ⭐ In his spare time, Fares enjoys hiking, playing video games, and trying out new restaurants in Edmonton with his friends! #DucksUnlimitedCanada #YouthAdvisoryCouncil #ConservationLeadership #FutureOfNature

Meet the 2024-2026 #DUCYouthAdvisoryCouncil! ➡️ Camille Desrosiers 📍 Quebec Camille was raised in a family that spent every summer weekend camping and hiking in various parts of Quebec. These experiences instilled in Camille a deep love for forests and natural spaces, which she associates with feelings of fulfilment and tranquility. This passion for green spaces influenced Camille’s academic path, culminating in a M.Sc. in biological sciences from the Université de Montréal, focusing on the decontamination of polluted soils through plant-based methods, known as phytoremediation. ⭐ Camille is guided by her passion for environmental conservation, advocating for the integration of marginalized populations, and supporting initiatives in the social economy. #DucksUnlimitedCanada #YouthAdvisoryCouncil #ConservationLeadership #FutureOfNature

For our last featured observation of the 2024 #DUCProjectDragonfly, we're sharing an aptly-named autumn meadowhawk, photographed and logged by iNaturalist user: jean3075 in Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley, Quebec. Autumn meadowhawks are one of the last species of dragonfly to be observed in any given year, with observations having been recorded well into November. If you're not ready to put away iNaturalist as the seasons change, migrate on over to our #DUCMigrationTracker project to log your bird observations this fall! ➡️ https://loom.ly/VAdQQVE #DucksUnlimitedCanada #CommunityScience #WetlandConservation #Habitat #Biodiversity #Quebec

As ocean tides sweep in daily from offshore, they carry silt and other materials that settle among the vegetation in the salt marsh environments on Canada’s coasts. The ecosystems that form are part of the verdant beauty that draws us to the water’s edge—but they also play a critical role in protecting our coastlines from erosion and flooding, and helping to maintain water quality. As Canada's coastal communities grow, these essential ecosystems are at increased risk of disappearing—but the good news is, Canada is creating a foundation for better environmental policy and Ducks Unlimited Canada is at the forefront of this change, by supporting the development of the technical framework for valuing salt marsh ecosystems with peer-review expertise.
