"To be honest with you, I was very dubious (about Women in Recovery)," says Judge Michelle Keely, a district judge in Tulsa and Pawnee Counties, Arizona. "Here was this new program with wraparound services. They said they wanted to help women and hold them accountable. And I was suspicious of that." But as the judge saw more of this comprehensive prison diversion program run out of Family & Children's Services, a large nonprofit in the county of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the more convinced she became of its value. "I saw women who had come in with drug problems. They were losing their children and were getting ready to go to prison, and I saw that Women in Recovery was really helping them. "It wasn’t just a group who was there to give them hugs. I saw women being held accountable and really getting better – back with their families; seeing their children; getting off drugs; getting jobs and becoming great members of society. What I saw really changed my mind about the program." A Q&A with the judge is the second of six interviews Barrett and Greene Inc. will be publishing with six people who are deeply involved in the program. It involves a year to 18 months of difficult but transformative work including about 500 hours of individual and group therapy that is all evidence-based. Its success relies on strong collaboration with governmental institutions including the courts, the criminal justice system in Oklahoma, Tulsa and neighboring counties and the State of Oklahoma. This program can be a model elsewhere. It has been an absolute joy working with Meagan McLean and the team at Envisio the past few months and we’re just getting started! Their passion for helping organizations is contagious and I couldn’t be more excited for our partnership.
When I started at Envisio, I had ideas about what I would enjoy about the role. I have been in some sort of sales role for over 20 years (that is tough to admit to myself lol) and I have always loved connecting with people. I have said it before, many of my favorite people on this planet I met through work. What I was not expecting, was to fall in love with public dashboards. From the perspective of a community member, I think it is so important to have access to seeing what my town/municipality/county are prioritizing. From a business perspective, I love the ability to collaborate on the vision a person, or persons, have for their organization. PLUS - it allows me a creative outlet - something I always welcome. Over the last few months, I have had the opportunity to partner with two incredible humans from the City of High Point. Together, we equipped them to present Envisio to their Finance Committee, City Council, and finally their Transparency Board (side note: what an AMAZING idea - a transparency board!). I have been consistently impressed with their unwavering vision and mission for their City. Meridith and Stephen you two are the bees knees. Check out the presentation to the Transparency Board. Snaps for High Point!! #strategicplanning #strategy #transparency #envisio #dashboards #publictrust #datastorytellers #data

"Our message is that transformation is possible. And I really believe strongly that the work we do is by far better than long-term incarceration." 🕊 - Mimi Tarrasch Be sure to check out this beautiful and important interview series from Barrett and Greene Inc. They often highlight important work being done by #WomenInGovernment and the public sector, and this 6 part interview series on the prison diversion program Women in Recovery. 👇
"It’s part of our secret sauce to address untreated mental illness and addiction and the significant traumas that (women) have had in their lives," says Mimi Tarrasch, chief program officer for Women in Recovery, a comprehensive prison diversion program run out of Family & Children's Services, a large nonprofit in the county of Tulsa, Oklahoma. It has had remarkable success in diverting women with drug and alcohol problems from long stretches in prison. In fact, for the 669 women who have graduated from the program the recidivism rate is less than 3%. For the next six weeks, Barrett and Greene Inc. will be publishing a series of interviews with six women who are deeply involved in the program. So grateful to be partnered with Jamie Lahtinen in our journey at Envisio and to have the chance to meet incredible leaders/fellow dog-people and local gov nerds 🤓 like Chad Wright. Chad is doing such incredible work helping our friends across the public sector improve leadership and internal culture, plus bolster themselves against burnout! (He and his team also share the inspiring stories- and wisdom - of public service heroes like Emily Crawford, Stephanie Reyes, MPA, Tony Haden, LaShon Ross, Jackson Daly and so many more through Forward Partners' awesome podcast.) Thanks for your timely advice and the just lovely conversation & connection, Chad! 🤠
One thing I love about serving local government is that public service attracts driven people with good hearts. Yesterday I had the privilege of a wide-ranging call with Abby Keeble and Jamie Lahtinen from Envisio. I loved just getting to nerd out about local government and leadership. While we may not be public servants ourselves, there are a lot of driven people with good hearts on the periphery of local government who are dedicated to creating a better future. It was inspiring to connect with them. #localgovernment #citymanagement #strategicplanning #leadership #publicservice
