About us
Are you Emotionally Fit? This is the question members of Event Minds Matter asked themselves before building the foundation of this thriving community. Who are we? We are a community of like-minded event, meeting, hospitality and travel professionals, who have come together to “BUILD BRAVE SPACES TO AMPLIFY THE INDUSTRY’S CONVERSATION ON EMOTIONAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. There are no borders in our pledge to bring awareness, action, and improved practices to those who are working without boundaries, respect and support. We share compassion, empathy and a drive to re-educate the industry on the human aspect of today's workforce. We know that the labels we wear as badges of honor have contributed to a mentally unfit workforce. We are dedicated and committed to finding solutions that create a culture of realistic expectations for everyone. Acknowledging the depth of this problem is just the beginning. Those courageous humans who have exposed their stories here on LinkedIn, did so because they wanted their voices to be heard. By sharing their personal success stories it supports others who still suffer in silence. We want to change the stressors and praise people who get vocal about the challenges at work, and find organizations who are creating space with respect, empathy, psychologlical safety training & practices that promote trust, safety & human sustainability. We are prepared to climb a mountain if that's what it takes to craft change. From our perspective, the support required does not end at simply acknowledging these challenges exist. When employees speak up, they shouldn't simply be given lip service and left to resolve their issues. We don't believe in being the 6th most stressful job, we want to challenge the status quo and have businesses certify their commitment to operating an emotion fit workplace by demonstrating new protocols and actions that benefit their employees, throughout the lifecycle of their commitment, dedication and passion.

The wounded Event Professional is not a diagnosis, it's a fact. The question is, do you know how to recognize someone who might be displaying signs of stress at work? Or do you prefer to ignore those signs because you do not know what to say? Support in the workplace to train the next generation of event and meeting profs must be mandatory. Why would we ever want to see a new crop of aspiring events and meeting profs suffer in silence. Where do you belong? Or do you know the answer to that! Lately I am being asked where people should spend their membership dollars and where they will feel appreciated? This has been a subject of concern for many who attended IMEX and who asked me and many others what they should do? My question to those who asked was, "what is important to you?" The responses were interesting to say the least. Humans of all ages have been disillusioned with the traditional associations who charge umpteen dollars, and don't give back the ROI on investment. Most of them never call you to find out why you left, but when they want you to join, they tell you that membership matters. But what if we challenged that theory? What if the next generation did not believe in the association model? What if they chose a new model that made them feel like they connected with and belonged to something with purpose and value. Welcome Club Ichi, the future of association membership for a fraction of the price. Did you know that you are welcomed with open arms, you are cared for, you are part of the next generation of thought leaders whose ideas are sought after by the biggest and best companies out there? They have masterclasses, they talk on slack, they find jobs and resources for those who are looking, they run crazy events where they combine think tanks, with human talent, that sail away into the sunshine. It sounds like a bit of exaggeration, but the women who founded this incredibly perfect hub for our industry have thought long and hard and listened to what the people want in a membership and a community. Since founding Event Minds Matter Empowered by Club Ichi one of the most important actions that I continue to engage in is creating a safe space to spark an honest, and brave conversation. . It is not easy to make people feel comfortable, feel heard, or appreciated. This is why my experience this year at IMEX was so important to the future of our communities mission. The beauty of IMEX was the opportunity to be present for others. To meet them where they are, to listen with an open mind, and to understand what matters to them. Everyone is so busy in this industry, and it is easy to forget that when you choose not to be present, you’re actually sending a signal to those around you that you don’t care enough to give someone else the support they might need First impressions are lasting impressions, and you may never get the acknowledgement or respect that you think others owe you for your work. Don’t stay in a space that does not value you, there are too many others that will. Do you work in a safe space where you can converse on things that are sensitive? Friday Facts and other curiosities drive me to establish a brave space for the next generation of human capital. Not with the glass half empty or half full, but with a renewed fascination for the thought provoking leaders who will one day take over our industry by storm and with purpose. But will they need hard hats? Or will they need support shields from caring, kind, and empathetic leaders whose DNA is made up of smart, respectful, caring, encouraging, components needed to fly them into a sustainable, healthy, and mindful industry in 2025. The answer is "YES." Entering the workplace is a zone, not always built for what this generation holds close to their hearts and souls. Get ready for the questions, get ready for their answers. They are going to ask you why they have to do what you told them to do. That should make you happy because no one has ever asked you that before and maybe that is because you demanded it, so your teams succumbed. Gen Z will not say yes if it does not have purpose or value and they will let you know why they feel the way they do. Are you going to tell them they're fired? If you do, just try and hire others, because they are all going to say the same thing, ask the same questions, and challenge you to try something else.. Wake up and listen. You're missing the next generation's invasion of our world as they demand change that benefits human nature, and the planet. Listen up, my suggestion is that you embrace their minds, you honor their experiences, and you teach, coach and mentor them to be organized, detailed, have dreams, have courage and be brave in any circumstance. Gen Z are looking for LIFE, WORK, BALANCE and I hope that you are listening carefully to what they stand for, because by 2025, 27% of the workforce will consist of Gen Zers, according to the World Economic Forum. Gen Z – people born in the late 90s to early 2010s – are entering the job market facing different conditions than millennials. And there are already interesting lessons to glean from their attitudes about the workplace. Millennials had to job-hunt during the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. Some of them are still struggling to own a home. Many of them have ditched hustle culture in favor of purposeful work. Gen Zers are also facing economic uncertainty – hello, inflation and climate change, war, and politics that would make anyone's eyes roll. But their professional growth is occurring at a time when remote and hybrid work models have become the norm and DEI is top of mind. Recruiting Gen Z candidates isn’t the same as the earlier generation as they care more about flexibility and living a meaningful life, but in different ways than their millennial counterparts. Perhaps it’s because they are more cynical about the world ahead. Maybe it’s because they led the quiet quitting revolution on TikTok and refuse to build their identities on what they do for a living. It’s also notable that Gen Z came of age during crises like Black Lives Matter and the pandemic. Being socially conscious is almost imperative for their generation – and it’s a key driving force behind their career decisions. After attending IMEX, I recognize how little the majority of event professionals know about this generation as if they are unconscious to what is going on around them. Their education will have to feed their curiosity, and drive their souls. They care about human sustainability. I scratch my head, when I hear conversation that points fingers at them for everything they have not succumbed to. Is that because many event profs think that what they were doing all these years was perfect? "I don't think so." I study Gen Z because this is the generation I care about most. They deserve to learn how to recognize problems in the workplace and they are entitled to know how to respond to them. If only we would pay more attention to them instead of measuring the difference between a cup of surveys' compared to a tablespoon of why the wifi did not support the registration platform! Guess what, they matter and the sooner you understand them, the better you will be in allowing them to support your business models. I say this with all due respect to our leaders who are still living in glass offices. Don't throw stones until you take time to listen to this generation. They are smart, strong, and sensitive. They say that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. But not this time! What began in Vegas at IMEX, continues to impact at the PCMA Canada East Chapter as Event Minds Matter Empowered by Club Ichi takes its ideology and mission to the Innovation Conference at the end of November. I have never been to Saskatoon, but I am told that it is a beautiful city and one that makes Canadians proud. My influence extends to Generation Z and how we are going to train them to recognize a problem in the workplace and how to respond to it. Lip service is useless and yet it's the popular go to for many leaders who do not prioritize their people. My mission is to Gather Voices from near and far from those in the event ecosystem who care about education and training enough to mandate it within the CMP, CMM, and other careers relating to the meeting, hospitality, and destination travel industries. I will not stop until I complete my mission because I have not spent the last three years listening, researching, and bringing awareness to a crisis that continues to affect the human capital in our industry globally. I am really looking forward to meeting the PCMA group who make up the East chapter to influence their thoughts and actions when it comes to trust, safety, and human sustainability. Together we can make changes and put an end to the fear, shame and stigma that is rampant in the industry because everyone worries about their reputation.
