A national not-for-profit dedicated to making cities flourish. HQ: Evergreen Brick Works

About us

Evergreen is a national non-profit working to transform public spaces in our cities for the health of people and our planet. Cities and communities that are better connected, inclusive to all and sustainable at their core. Cities that are bursting with life. Since 1991, Evergreen has been working to steward our planet, educate the next generation and create green, public spaces that benefit our cities and communities. Working with other city builders and community leaders to develop innovative ideas and catalyze change by testing solutions and help scale projects that benefit both people and our planet. Through our award-winning suite of programs, we have actively engaged Canadians in creating and sustaining healthy urban environments in our schools, our public spaces, in housing and transit systems, and communities themselves. Greener, vibrant cities start here – at a site, in a neighbourhood, on the ground – where spaces become great places, and have a real and lasting impact, creating a better world for all. Previously a historic brick factory, Evergreen Brick Works was transformed by Evergreen in 2010 to be an example and showcase of how that comes to life and is made possible.A demonstration hub where the world can experience sustainable practices that enable vibrant cities of the future. It connects people, business, academia and government to turn what-if’s into how-to’s that will shape our country for the better.

Cities around the world are grappling with unprecedented, climate change-related hazards like rainfall, flooding and heat whose frequency and severity continue to increase. How may cities respond and adapt to these extreme events? In Dr. Luna Khirfan's session at the 2024 Evergreen Conference, she'll be leading a walk through Evergreen Brick Works to discuss the daylighting of Mud Creek. This conversational walk introduces the participants to nature-based climate change solutions, specifically the daylighting of urban streams and rivers. Join us at CityTalk Live this Thursday, Aug. 8 at 12 p.m. ET! Heat, floods and fires: Can Canadian cities cope with the extremes? Evergreen CEO Jen Angel joins the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) series, where city and community experience will meet science in a candid conversation about how Canadian cities have been impacted by extreme weather and what we are doing (and can plan to do) to adapt for the future. Today’s cities face huge challenges in both preparing for and recovering from the growing impact of extreme weather events. In Canada, over 80 percent of Canadians live in cities and towns, making climate change an important urban challenge. This concentration of people, infrastructure, and resources in urban areas make cities uniquely vulnerable to the growing risks of a changing climate. Beyond risks, it also challenges us to adapt and innovate future planning, as the climate determines almost everything about how we design, build and live in our cities.
