During our webinar with Fix The Broken Rung, we discussed the crucial roles that allies, mentors and sponsors play in creating a more equitable industry. Panelist Hao Tian shared some personal insight into the importance of allyship in her own career; “I do think allyship is very very important in the financial world. I personally experienced the power of allyship through my Return to Bay Street journey because the program is a really tailor-made program. While not all conversations lead to job offerings, building allyship throughout the way is very helpful. You get more people advocating for you, probably behind the door, and that actually increases your chance to getting in a new role, or getting promoted. I think that’s the power of allyship.” — Hao T., Director of Sustainability Advisory, CIBC Capital Markets VersaFi’s Return to Bay Street Program helps women re-enter the finance sector after a period of leave, or after immigration. To date, it has brought 124+ women back to the finance sector. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eRyxCsTV

Areej Mehdi graduated from the Fix The Broken Rung career accelerator in June. A few months later, she secured a promotion. And because Fix The Broken Rung's mission is to help one million women of color get promoted, we asked her to give us a play-by-play of how she did it. From Areej: ************* The Fix The Broken Rung Accelerator taught me that having a clear promotion strategy is key. I learned a step-by-step process, complete with milestones and deadlines, that kept me focused and efficient. 🪜 Define your promotion goal: Take the time to clearly articulate the role and level of responsibility you aspire to. Being specific allows you to break down the necessary qualifications and identify the steps required to achieve your goal. Aim for a role that offers growth opportunities both within and outside your current organization. 🪜 Define the ICP (Ideal Candidate Profile): Create a summary of the skills and experiences you need to acquire to qualify for the promotion. Look beyond the company's career ladder and identify the specific skill gaps you must fill. Think about the results you need to deliver to demonstrate your readiness for the promotion and consider the projects you can work on or initiate to achieve those results. 🪜 Learn the talent management process: Gain a deep understanding of your company's talent management process. Familiarize yourself with the talent calibration process and schedule a separate meeting with your manager. Seek an honest assessment of your current skills and work together to create a plan to address any gaps. Regular quarterly check-ins will help you track your progress. 🪜 Develop advocates and manage your brand: Cultivate relationships with advocates within and outside your company. Connect with individuals who hold the position you aspire to and learn from their experiences. Additionally, focus on managing your personal brand by showcasing your capabilities and the value you bring to the table. 🪜 Make your business case for promotion: When the time is right, present a compelling business case for your promotion. Showcase your accomplishments, highlight the impact you've made, and align yourself with the organization's goals. Clearly articulate the value you bring and how your promotion would benefit the team and company. Remember, success is not solely about working harder but working smarter. By following these steps and implementing a strategic approach, we can navigate our career paths with confidence and purpose. Let's unlock our full potential, break down barriers, and pave the way for future generations of racialized immigrant women. ************* Congratulations, Areej, on a very well-deserved promotion! 👉🏽 If you know someone looking to step up their career, share this post with them!

Excited to share the latest installment in my Jump the Rung career accelerator series! This time let's dive into the world of personal branding. I always associated the word “branding” with a company or product, so the concept of creating a “personal brand” seemed a little strange. But at its core, personal branding is about reputation. It’s about what people associate you with, how you are perceived, and even whether you come across as a credible authority in your field. With that being said, click the link to learn how you can start developing your own personal brand! 👇 ********** Follow #FixTheBrokenRung and Amal Masri to learn more about the Jump the Rung career accelerator and other opportunities!
