During our recent forest and mill tour in Timmins and Cochrane, Ontario (700km north of Toronto), Chief Forester Chris McDonnell and members of the GreenFirst Forest Products team shared the full process of how a 2x4s (and other dimensional lumber) are made. Special care is taken from the forest to the finished product. From biodiversity protections and conservation, community engagement and Indigenous participation, harvest plans (they harvest approximately 0.5% of their total forest management unit each year), tree cutting and re-planting, and ensuring maximum use of each tree to make the products we need. As architect and participant Carol Cochrane from Moriyama Teshima Architects shared, “it was humbling to witness the harvesting of the trees and eye opening to learn of the careful planning and management of this incredible natural resource. The depth of your knowledge, care and respect for the forest came through loud and clear."
