We’ve been designing reliable environmental monitoring solutions for extreme environments for 40 years.
About us
FTS, an AEM brand, was founded in 1980 to address the demanding weather information requirements of the world’s premier forest fire management agencies. The fire community’s strong requirements for rock-solid dependability and fast, trouble-free operation shaped FTS’s early product development efforts and helped create a corporate culture dedicated to meeting the practical needs of its customers. Today, our products are measuring, recording, and analyzing changes in watersheds, national forests, nationwide weather system networks, supply streams for drinking water reservoirs, the waters of fish and wildlife refuges and many other environments. Our monitoring stations reflect three decades of technological advancement focused on our goal of designing and manufacturing the world’s most reliable, simplest to use, and simplest to maintain systems. Our headquarters, research and design lab, and factory are located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, with a branch office in Blaine, Washington. From here, we supply products and services around the world, including North America, South America, Asia, and Europe. FTS stations have proven themselves under the most demanding conditions, from the most remote northern regions of Canada to the sun beaten, wind-blown salt and sand of the Mexican coast. Our customers include over 50 government agencies in the United States, Canada, and Mexico: customers who demand the highest levels of reliability, accuracy, and operational effectiveness.

Happy Pi Day-3/14! It's not something that most meteorologists think about on a daily basis, but did you know that PI is foundational to most meteorological models? That's because the Earth is a sphere, so weather systems follow its curvature as they travel across the surface. Remember Πr2? Perhaps you also remember that PI's decimal representation is infinite and non-repeating? For fun, we asked a few of our teammates to see how many decimal places they could name. See how well they did.

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) is doing something innovative to plan, predict, and warn residents of impending #floods. They're combining data from radar and rain gauges to get a more accurate and more granular view into how precipitation varies across their coverage area. That technology is called #GARR or Gauge Adjusted Radar Rainfall. Check out the full story from Government Technology magazine.

#MultisourceHazardDetection ℹ️ When it comes to detecting natural hazards, it makes no difference how great or how reliable you think your data source might be... 🛰️ It doesn't matter if it's a camera, a satellite, a sensor, a person, or a weather station... 🧠 It might be powered by AI (or not)... 😥 Eventually, your data source is going to fail you. Not because it's bad, but because every data source is designed for a finite range of use cases. Eventually, you're going to run into a use case they didn't foresee. When that happens, one of two things will happen: ⏰ (1) You'll realize your data source has failed only after it's too late. OR 💪 (2) You'll have alternative data sources to corroborate your primary source and compensate for its limitations. Let's hope it's the second option! Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gNwqD5z5

Every dollar spent of #floodprotection can save $5-$8 in potential losses. But, there's also a lot that can go wrong, especially if your warning system isn't designed right. Our latest guide walks you through the essentials of developing an effective flood warning system, including the components you'll need and the main considerations you'll need to take into account. https://lnkd.in/gqrnEyAG

The Los Angeles #wildfires weren't just a fluke; they represent a larger set of trends that are exposing communities across the world to greater and greater risk. Our old wildfire playbooks are simply no longer equipped to deal with the growing risk; we need a new and improved playbook. Here are some thoughts from fire expert Keith Lombard on where we're falling short and the direction we need to go. https://hubs.li/Q034NhyP0
