Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia (PVNH) is a developmental brain disorder that causes learning disabilities and seizures. This happens when nerve cells abnormally clump around the brain's ventricles. PVNH mostly affects women with epilepsy, but men can also be affected - sometimes more severely. Symptoms in men can include epilepsy, intellectual disabilities, and other congenital irregularities. People with PVNH experience focal and generalised tonic-clonic seizures. The type of seizures depend on where the clumps are and which brain region is affected. Diagnosis is best done through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and an electroencephalogram (EEG) if seizures are a concern. Lung cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in men and women and today, on World Lung Cancer Day, we recognize the importance of prevention and early detection. Today, we raise awareness about avoiding risk factors such as tobacco smoke, second hand smoke, and workplace exposures to substances such as asbestos and diesel exhaust. These are important factors in minimizing the risks of developing lung cancer later in life. #WorldLungCancerDay

An internationally recognized pioneer in oncology nursing, she significantly contributed to developing cancer care programs and nurse training initiatives, advancing cancer nursing administration and clinical practice. Every year, the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncology Societies, IFHNOS IFHNOS raises awareness about the impact of head and neck cancers. In 2024, it is estimated that 8100 Canadians will be diagnosed with head and neck cancer, with more men expected to receive diagnoses than women. Today, we recognize the importance of recognizing symptoms and getting frequent check ups in order to improve early diagnosis #worldheadandneckcancerday.

#OnThisDay Rosalind Franklin was born! 🎉 A biophysicist and X-ray crystallographer who made important contributions to the understanding of the fine molecular structures of DNA, RNA, viruses, coal and graphite, Franklin worked as a Research Fellow at Birkbeck during the 1950s. She worked alongside Aaron Klug, making discoveries into the structure of RNA. It is widely thought that she was deprived of the Nobel Prize by her early death. This week (July 21-27) is National Drowning Prevention Week in Canada! 🇨🇦 Drowning isn't always fatal. Many people survive submersion incidents, but the consequences can be life-altering. Non-fatal drowning happens when someone experiences difficulty breathing due to water entering their airways, but they manage to survive. While they may not die from the incident, the effects can be serious. Here's why non-fatal drowning is a hidden danger: • Long-term health problems: Even a short period underwater can lead to lung damage, brain injury from lack of oxygen, and other health issues that may develop over time. • Psychological trauma: The experience of near-drowning can be terrifying and leave lasting emotional scars. Children are especially vulnerable: They may not understand the dangers or be strong swimmers. This week, let's focus on keeping everyone safe!
