Montney provides potential upside in the Middle Montney, along with the opportunity to optimize drilling and completions operations and production facilities. Tourmaline clearly saw the potential for growth in the area that Crew had mapped out with an aggressive licensing push in 2023 adding 138 wells to its assets, compared to the 170 currently producing wells. Tourmaline’s activity in the Doe area, southeast of Crew’s, is a mixture of both Upper and Middle Montney development, while Crew’s activity is firmly focused on the Upper Montney. With the limited amount of development of the Middle Montney on Crew lands, Tourmaline will more than likely take the learnings from its Middle Montney development and transfer that knowledge to optimize Crew’s assets in that bench. Completion design differences are evident, starting with Crew’s more aggressive well designs including longer laterals, higher proppant, and fluid intensities in both the Upper and the Middle Montney. The heterogeneity and quality of the reservoir and the benefit of exploration is highlighted by the recent liquids-rich Crew wells in the north section of the Monias area (13-36). This was probably one of the key investment criteria given the positive impact the acquisition will have on Tourmaline’s overall corporate liquids production. There is undoubtedly much more to explore in the overall Montney formation as it continues to deliver welcome surprises. Drilling activity continues at a steady pace across the WCSB. The Top 15 operators by rig release from January to June 2024 are highlighted in this insight. Click here to view this data in an advanced geospatial platform that is instantly available free of charge to guest users of geoLOGIC’s gDC Cloud ➡️: https://lnkd.in/gTgXGaMy. To gain unlimited access to view all the Top 15 operators and where they are focusing their activity, register for a free Starter Plan account here: https://lnkd.in/gRU8As8i 💡 Top 15 operators by rig release from January to June 2024: A total of 3,434 wells were drilled and rig released from January to June 2024 (inclusive). Cenovus Energy leads the way as the top operator with 400 wells, followed by Canadian Natural Resources at 330 wells, Spur Petroleum at 323 wells, and Headwater Exploration at 296 wells. 💡 Top formations targeted by the Top 15 operators: Thermal activity in the McMurray Formation puts Cenovus in the top position. The second most active operator is CNRL, with a diversified position across 15 different formations. The Clearwater formation dominates well activity for several top operators with a notable increase in activity in the Waseca formation helping push Rubellite Energy into fifth position for overall activity.  💡 Top drilling contractors for the Top 15 operators: Given the diversity of plays being targeted — it is no surprise to see an equally broad cross-section of active drilling contractors in the market. The leading drilling contractors used by the Top 15 operators were Precision Drilling, Ensign Drilling, Bonanza Drilling, Savanna Drilling, and Western Energy Services. 💡 Top licensed substance by the Top 15 operators: Thermal and multi-lateral project activity helped to drive bitumen to the top licensed substance for eight of the Top 15 operators, while seven of the Top 15 operators drilled for oil as well. Natural gas licences represent a small percentage of top operators’ current activity. Click here to view this data in an advanced geospatial platform that is instantly available free of charge to guest users of geoLOGIC’s gDC Cloud ➡️: https://lnkd.in/giTtqVnC. To gain unlimited access to view the Top 15 Formations Spud from January 1, 2024, to August 31, 2024, register for a free Starter Plan account here: https://lnkd.in/gRU8As8i In our Spud Activity Dashboard, we applied a filter to highlight activity from Jan. 1, 2024, to Aug. 31, 2024; the results showed that 104 formations were targeted during this period (yielding 7,802 wells/well-legs), but we manually selected the Top 15 (which reduced the dataset to 6,312 wells/well-legs). The top formations highlight the diverse assets being targeted in the WCSB, with the Clearwater leading the list (spread between the conventional heavy oil play dominated by mostly multilateral completions and thermal oilsands operations).  Multilateral completions have moved beyond the Clearwater and have helped raise a few new formations to the top of the list, including General Petroleum, Spirit River and Falher. Operators continue to actively spud thermal and heavy oil wells, with the top of the list including the McMurray, Waseca, Frobisher beds, Midale beds, Rex and Sparky. Shale gas wells in the Montney (768) and Duvernay (145) continue to expand and infill with large-scale completions. Shallower Viking projects along the Alberta/Saskatchewan border are being drilled steadily, while Deep Basin completions continue to be revisited across the WCSB (Cardium, Falher, Bluesky, etc). Rounding out the Top 15 formations drilled are the Midale beds in southeast Saskatchewan with 109 wells spudded. The Top 3 operators that drilled in these formations are: Cenovus Energy (predominantly thermal McMurray wells, Waseca, Sparky and Rex), Canadian Natural’s Montney shale and thermal activity Sparky, Waseca, and McMurray) and Headwater Exploration’s drilling of Clearwater multilaterals. Spud counts peaked in February and July, however extended pad drilling in the Montney and on multilateral well pads kept activity moving over spring breakup, with 472 drilling starts in April (the month with the lowest tally). As companies continue to develop and grow their key assets, the top formations are not a big surprise. However, there are plays that are expanding to new areas. Examples include the Clearwater, which is moving north of Dawson to Cadotte (Obsidian and Baytex), and the Duvernay, which has a new exploration well drilled south of the Sturgeon Lake Reef (Logan Energy). NOT QUITE, BUT ALMOST OVERNIGHT, CANADA BECAME A REAL GLOBAL ENERGY CONTENDER... The history books will tell us many years from now that 2023-2025 were important years in Canada's international expansion aspirations, as expanded pipelines and new #LNG projects freed the country's hydrocarbon molecules from dependence primarily on the US market. But all this is occurring against a backdrop of price volatility and a complex range of external pressures. Indeed, these are the most complicated of times and that's why a granular grasp on critical sector and market nuances is important. That's exactly what KPMG Canada and geoLOGIC systems ltd. have done collaboratively in our 2023 Top Operators Report (as we have done for some time now.) Don't be fooled by the year: it is the basis for impactful analysis of key trends and patterns that take us well into the future. For example, we probe and explore: - What increased oil and gas export capacity means for Canada's top operators. - Top operators spending in 2023 in anticipation of improving market access. - Building positions in key plays is a strategic advantage.  - How operators are leveraging tools to protect netbacks. - Some top operators are placing early bets on energy transition technologies. This report should be required reading for anyone serious about wanting to know where the drill bit is going to be, metaphorically speaking, and how the Canadian sector will navigate global waters. You can download a complimentary copy at the link in the comments. For folks with global connections, send the report link their way.
