🎙️ NEW EPISODE ALERT - Michael Hancock - Der Bräuer! Between Two Fermenters Podcast by GLB🎙️ In this episode, Troy Burtch sits down with Michael Hancock himself, a legend in Canadian brewing with four decades of stories, innovations, and inspirations. Step back to 1976, when a young Hancock arrived in Canada for what he thought would be a brief engineering role at Molson’s. But a decade later, Michael’s passion for the craft of brewing sparked a new path. After studying at the prestigious Siebel Institute and an inspiring encounter with Bavarian royalty, Michael pivoted from engineering to brewing—a decision that would change Ontario’s beer scene for good. In 1989, Denison’s Brewpub at 75 Victoria Avenue in Toronto was born with a focus on German style beers in a predominately English Ale era in Ontario. Denison’s quickly became an institution, a place where Hancock’s beers set the stage for a new generation of brewers. Though Denison’s closed in 2003, his passion didn’t waver. Through collaborations and contract brewing, he kept Denison’s flavors alive until he found his new home at Side Launch Brewing in 2014, bringing new vigor to his iconic brands and earning Side Launch the title of Canadian Brewery of the Year in 2016. We discuss it all and more in this in-depth interview. Big week ahead as it's the 12th annual Ontario Craft Brewers (OCB) Conference and Supplier's Marketplace. It's always an awesome time for the industry as it brings hundreds of breweries and suppliers together for two jam-packed days of networking and learning. One of the things I'm looking forward to, is interviewing Jody Palubiski, CEO of the Charcoal Group of Restaurants, in a fun fireside chat on day two. The conversation will explore Jody’s leadership journey, the evolution of the restaurant industry, and the strategies behind the Charcoal Group's and Beertown Public House's success. As someone who admires what they've built, I have no doubt that this chat will be enlightening from both a brand building and hospitality perspective. https://lnkd.in/gYx72NV9 #OCBC24 #Beertown #Hospitality

🎙️ Special One-Off Episode of Between Two Fermenters: An Ontario Merger - Lake of Bays and Merit 🎙️ On October 15, news broke about two Ontario breweries joining forces. That information garnered a lot of attention, and the industry was a buzz with the news, so like a one-off beer, we had to record a special episode to get all the juicy details. Yes, Lake of Bays Brewing Company and MERIT Brewing Company shared the news that they were merging their two breweries, eliciting a lot of congratulatory messages and questions like “what does this mean” - a brewery in Hamilton... and a brewery in Baysville (that’s up north folks)... merging? Was it a sale? What will happen next? To learn more about it, Darren Smith (President and CEO, Lake of Bays) and Tej Sandhu (President and Co-Founder, Merit) joined Troy Burtch on the pod to spill the beans, to walk him through the details and what it all means for Ontario craft beer drinkers. Yesterday, I posted about the new 'Save Local Craft Beer' campaign that the Ontario Craft Brewers (OCB) recently kicked off. Today I'm sharing a video from CBC in which myself and a number of other Ontario brewery owners/representatives share what tax reform would look like to them and their businesses here in the province - what it would mean for communities and retail. https://lnkd.in/gd-ztAfH #SaveLocalCraftBeer #KeepCraftBeerLocal #TeamGLB #OntarioCraftBeer Learn more about the campaign - (https://lnkd.in/g9x_zANx) Scott Simmons, Greg Taylor, Todd Lewin, Steam Whistle Brewing, Great Lakes Brewery (Toronto, ON), Muskoka Brewery, Ryan Cole, Muddy York Brewing Co., Ontario Craft Brewers (OCB), Talia Ricci,

Earlier this week, Scott Simmons and the Ontario Craft Brewers (OCB) launched the 'Save Local Craft Beer' campaign. Let's talk about it... The goal of the campaign, which builds on last year’s very successful Keep Craft Beer Local effort, is to highlight how Ontario craft beer taxes (the highest in Canada) are putting the future of locally-owned breweries at risk. It calls on government to immediately lower the tax burden on craft breweries while reforming the whole beer tax system. Did you know Ontario's local brewers pay eight times more tax compared to Alberta? And the tax increase for local breweries is three times higher than for foreign-owned ones? There are also three levels of beer tax in Ontario, a 9 cent can tax on beer cans, and no progressive modelling on HL. See, it needs reforming, or modernized if you will. Save Local Craft Beer isn’t just about numbers. Supporting local craft breweries is about: 🏗️ Creating stable jobs right here in our communities - both within and outside of brewery walls 🏭 Investing in brick and mortar businesses that build and support communities in every RIDING in Ontario 🍺 Allowing breweries to adapt to new retail channels, getting more variety on store shelves 💡 Encouraging innovation right here in Ontario We need a fair and simplified tax system that allows Ontario's craft breweries to not only survive, but thrive for years to come. As a longtime employee, and advocate, in the the craft brewing industry, I urge you to support this movement. Visit www.savelocalcraftbeer.ca and add your voice. It's fast and simple and will help. Together, we can let MPPs know what independent craft beer means to the province, and we can protect the future of local businesses in the process. 🙌 #SaveLocalCraftBeer #SupportLocal #OntarioCraftBrewers #CraftBeer

New episode of 'Between Two Fermenters' is now live. Troy Burtch sits down with Aaron Prothro, the Founder and CEO of Mascot Brewery. Through Aaron, Mascot was Canada’s first Black owned and operated brewery when he opened the doors back in 2015, something that he is extremely proud of and uses for good. Through his “Black Owned Collab” series he aspires to empower other black entrepreneurs to build a better world, knocking down barriers to entry for everyday people who just want to drink a delicious beer. He tells Troy all about that and more, like how he got his start in beer, what is important to him, and how he’s the Chill Master. The Cole’s Notes segment has Cole Raiskums talking about the multiple antimicrobials layers of beer which make it safe to drink. It’s an interesting one. Did you catch the new episode of Between Two Fermenters with Jennifer Reinhardt yet? In this episode, Troy Burtch sits down with Jen Reinhardt, the Senior Sales Manager with GLB and one of the driving forces behind the brand, to discuss her journey in the craft beer industry. Jen has been with GLB for almost six years, but her journey with us started way back in 2014. After getting her feet wet in the beer industry while still working in publishing, Jen realized how thrilling this world was and moved on to Muskoka Brewery before returning to her true home at GLB in 2019. Since then, she’s reshaped our sales team and brought incredible energy to the brewery, leading teams with kindness. #TeamGLB #Podcast #BetweenTwoFermenters

We love it when both teams come together to talk beer! Have you visited the GLB Brewpub yet? #TeamGLB
Senior Manager: Sales and Business Development, Great Lakes Brewery - Host of Between Two Fermenters podcast - Board Member, The Waterfront BIA
One of the Values that we hold dear at Great Lakes Brewery is Teamwork. Another is Fun. We recently put the two of them in action at the GLB Brewpub as the crew came together for a day of beer education, food tasting, GLB history, customer service success stories and team building. I had the pleasure to share the storied history of GLB and the beer industry, outline why we strive to create memorable experiences with each guest interaction, and why our community at GLB means so much to us. My colleague, Cole Raiskums lead the team through a very in-depth sensory tasting of our year-round brands, sharing tips and tricks for tasting, food pairing suggestions, and how to detect off-flavours. Nicholas Perry walked everyone through the brewing process (from start to finish) to provide each team member with the necessary information that they can share with guests. Our talented Chef, Krsna Mariel Algenio, wowed the team with some new dishes that have since been added to the menu, which were used to help with pairing ideas. And our GM, James Fletcher, ensured that the team members had the time needed to get the training in before a busy afternoon service. A fun, yet educational day, that I won’t soon forget. #TeamGLB #Teamwork #Fun #GreatLakesBeer
