Grounded's Max Ho will be presenting at the #DFI49 conference alongside Hiu Lee from KELLER! A presentation of their paper titled, "A Unique Application of Diaphragm Wall to facilitate the excavation of New River Channel on The Port Lands Flood Protection and Enabling Infrastructure Project in Toronto, Ontario" is happening at 4:35pm on Wednesday, October 9. Here’s a preview of the abstract: The Port Lands in Downtown Toronto is a vast waterfront area that has long remained undeveloped. The Port Lands Flood Protection and Enabling Infrastructure Project (PLFP) seeks to unlock the development potential of this strategic downtown land. This initiative also simultaneously mitigating flood risks for the Port Lands and surrounding areas. The project involves the creation of a new river channel through the existing Port Lands to redirect floodwaters into the inner harbor and Lake Ontario. The innovative use of a diaphragm wall technique to construct the west plug wall allows the wall to serve as a dock wall, dam, excavation support, cut-off wall, and load-bearing element throughout the different stages of the river excavation. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the design and installation of the west plug wall, as well as valuable insights into the practical application of diaphragm walls and how it helps deliver this complex urban flood protection and infrastructure projects. We hope you are able to join Max and Hiu's presentation at the 49th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Aurora, Colorado!

Michael Diez de Aux had the pleasure of being interviewed by Eric Philpott and Joseph Crawford as a geotechnical engineering expert talking about open excavation safety for Dresden 1957, a documentary film recalling the workplace tragedy that claimed the lives of several immigrant workers in a small Ontario town in 1957. Grounded is thrilled to be a part of the 320 Geneva development! What an incredible experience working with such amazing and dedicated people at Niagara Region, Niagara Region Housing, and the City of St. Catharines. This meaningful collaboration ensures more safe and affordable housing in the region.
Mayor Mat Siscoe and the City were pleased to welcome Paul Calandra, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and Associate Minister Vijay Thanigasalam to St. Catharines today, to tour the Riordon Street temporary housing shelter, followed by a stop at 320 Geneva St. to talk about the province's $6.1 million investment into housing and homelessness prevention. Also participating were MPP Sam Oosterhoff, Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley and MPP Jennie Stevens. These investments include $2.6 million to help create the Riordon shelter, and more than $3.5 million towards supportive housing at 320 Geneva St. - both projects here in St. Catharines. The City provided the Geneva Street property, which formerly housed recreational staff, to Niagara Regional Housing, and a three-phase project development will include Bridge Housing, NRH affordable housing and land provided for private-market development. The City is proud of its partnership with the Region and recognizes the importance of additional transition and bridge housing for the community.
