GFA or CFA? To help bottom-out the debate between what the most effective denominator is for embodied carbon reporting we put together a series of scenarios looking at how lower carbon construction and parking provisions effect total emissions for the same amount of housing provided. Conclusion: GFA tracks total emissions, CFA does not. If you want to reduce emissions, use GFA as the denominator in your reporting. Last week Ha/f’s Ryan Bruer led final reviews of our latest seminar. This summer we partnered with Parks Canada and University of Waterloo to assess eight Parks visitors’ centres across Canada. Thank you to the amazing group of students who made this an insightful and rewarding semester through forensic-like 3D modelling and a passion to learn and apply LCA. Should we wrap buildings in curtain wall? The short answer? No. The long answer? Definitely not. Based on research from Ha/f Climate Design (and many others) you can see a significant reduction in envelope performance at the same time as a significant increase in embodied carbon. W1 = 2x6 Timber stud wall w/ brick cladding, PVC windows, 30% WWR W2 = Aluminum curtainwall, 100% WWR Don't get me wrong, there is a place for this amazing product. But wrapping buildings in a low-performance, high-carbon material isn't it. This is just the coles notes. Check out my newsletter next week for a more detailed breakdown.
