Did you know that Habitat for Humanity GTA pays HST/GST on the construction of our affordable homes? While the federal and provincial governments do not collect HST/GST for purpose-built rental, affordable rental, co-op housing, and student housing, this exemption does not apply to non-profit affordable ownership. We thank the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board, Ontario Real Estate Association and The Canadian Real Estate Association | L'Association canadienne de l'immobilier for advocating that governments extend their 2023 decisions to provide this relief to affordable ownership homes by the end of 2024.

Today we have the immense pleasure of officially welcoming home a Habitat Partner Family to their new home at Daniels Mount Pleasant Village in Brampton. This community was made possible thanks to an incredible partnership with The Daniels Corporation and Choice Properties. "Since moving in, our lives have completely transformed. Our daughter's health has significantly improved, and we're watching her thrive in our new environment," said Heena. "The joy and excitement she exudes as she explores every corner of our new home is priceless. This home signifies more than just walls and a roof. Habitat for Humanity GTA is Looking for Crew Leaders 🏡 At Habitat for Humanity GTA, we're tackling one of the most critical issues of our time: the need for affordable homes. Volunteers like you can help build homes for working families in our communities to provide them with affordable, safe, and secure places to live, enabling children to thrive. Habitat for Humanity GTA is excited to share that we have a new build project starting in Brampton next month. We need the help of community members like you to donate your time at our build sites by becoming a volunteer Crew Leader.  What you need to know about becoming a Crew Leader: 🔨 Some Build experience is required  👷 Onsite Training: Our skilled Site Supervisor provides comprehensive onsite training.  🛡️ Safety First: We provide all the necessary Personal Protective Equipment for volunteers.  🏗️ Year-Round Building: We're on the construction site 12 months a year, Monday to Friday, with 8-hour shifts from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Shifts are self-scheduled via online registration.  ⏰ Time Commitment: We ask for a commitment of two shifts per month as part of the Crew program. Build Site Locations: 🏠 485 Normandy Street, Oshawa  🏠 NEW: 25 William Street, Brampton  Crew Leader Responsibilities: ✅ Interest in Construction: Develop an interest in various construction phases, including framing, drywalling, landscaping, insulating, flooring, etc.  👥 Lead Volunteers: Lead volunteers with different levels of construction skillsets, including homeowners, while maintaining safety, quality, and fun.  📚 Training: Attend our health, safety, and construction training sessions.  🛠️ Safety: Assist in providing a safe and healthy working environment, including equipment use, personal protective equipment for volunteers, task delegation, weather preparedness, cleaning, and more.  🌟 Positive Attitude: Come with a willingness to learn from experienced staff and volunteers. Yesterday we had the immense pleasure of officially welcoming two Habitat BNI Partner Families to their new homes at Olivia Marie Gardens Phase 2 (OMG 2) in Brampton. The day was possible thanks to a tremendous partnership with BlackNorth Initiative, The Daniels Corporation, Government of Canada, and Region of Peel. This milestone marks a significant achievement in providing the benefits of affordable homeownership opportunities for families from our Black communities. It was an emotional moment as we heard from Nikesha, one of the families who recently moved in: "We truly love our new home, so much that during our moving process, we had [a whole month], and our plan was to move everything slowly... The plan was to sleep here on weekends and sleep at the old apartment during the week... However, after our first weekend here we didn’t want to go back to the apartment." A special thanks to Dahabo Ahmed-Omer, Heela Omarkhail, Sonia Sidhu, Nando Iannicca, Harsh Damani CPA,CA, Wanita Fonseka for making this partnership and the Welcome Home a truly special one, and to the many volunteers, donors and countless others supporting our work at Habitat for Humanity GTA.
