I recently read The Workshopper Playbook by Jonathan Courtney and was particularly impressed by the 4C’s Framework for leading workshops. Have you ever attended a meeting that dragged on for hours, only to end with a decision to schedule yet another meeting? This often happens due to a lack of structure and clear framework. Have you also been in meetings where recommendations are proposed before even properly identifying the problem? Or found yourself overwhelmed by too many issues, struggling to decide which one to tackle first? The 4C’s Framework—Collect, Choose, Create, and Commit—offers a practical approach to structuring workshops and meetings effectively. One of the best things about hashtag #facilitation is that you don’t need to be a subject matter expert to lead a productive session—all you need are the right tools. The framework starts with the Collect stage, where participants gather information about the issue at hand. One effective method for this is the Sailboat exercise, which helps explore both the positive and negative aspects of a situation. Next is the Choose stage, where participants prioritize key challenges, often using a voting system like sticky dots to ensure focus on what truly matters. Once priorities are set, the Create stage follows, where solutions are brainstormed for the selected challenges. Even here, there's flexibility in deciding which solutions to address within the given time. Finally, the Commit stage ensures accountability by assigning responsibilities using an Action Board—a simple but powerful tool for tracking execution. For more insights and practical tools, I highly recommend reading the hashtag #WorkshopperPlaybook. Additionally, I encourage you to explore the International Association of Facilitators (IAF) —we have an hashtag #IAFEthiopiaChapter, where we meet and learn more about facilitation. Lastly, hashtag #FASILITATE is an emerging initiative designed to empower facilitators and lead impactful workshops in Ethiopia and beyond. Let’s shape better meetings and drive meaningful change!

Facilitative book studies create brave spaces where we can learn from both authors and peers through rich conversations. This session is open not only to the IAF community but also to the broader facilitator community who speak Japanese. We are thrilled that Sumiyo Shiina will guide us in this exploration. Our book club has a unique approach that allows everyone to delve deeply into the book's content while also building meaningful relationships within our community.
