What is the state of the European steel industry? How can we break down barriers to climate finance for subnational governments? Here's what's been happening this week at Climate Group. Links to full stories in comments. ⭕ With the EU having newly unveiled its Steel and Metals Plan, and the Clean Industrial Deal, what is the state of the European steel transition? SteelZero is proud to join 27 other civil society organisations in endorsing and contributing to a new report which urges the EU to forge a clear path to green steel. Europe’s steel industry is at a crossroads: It can double down on outdated, coal-based steelmaking, or shift to green steel. Steel buyers and users have a key role to drive change by committing to procurement agreements and offtake deals. This is essential to create a stable market for net zero emission steel. ⭕ On a recent visit to India, our CEO Helen Clarkson spoke with the Press Trust Of India (Pti) on India’s renewable energy ambitions and how the country is pursuing economic and climate goals at the same time. ⭕ This week, our Executive Director of Governments and Policy, Champa Patel, spoke at Chatham House's #CHClimateEnergy on a panel discussing 'Closing the finance gap and economic transition in the BRICS+'. She highlighted that when it comes to climate finance, “we know what needs to be done, but structural and bureaucratic barriers continue to slow us down.” Although a lack of political will and geopolitical tension and competition is hindering progress, “a lot that can be learnt from subnational governments.” ⭕ The Future Fund empowers developing economies to drive bold, climate-positive action. We hosted our first #NextGenerationBudgets in-person event in Brussels this week, bringing together climate policy and finance government officials from Hawaii, Colorado, Maryland, Scotland, Wales, Baden—Wurttemberg, North Rhine Westphalia, Lombardy, Catalonia, Emilia Romagna, and Basque Country. The two-day workshop explored ways to strengthen green budgeting and investment strategies at the subnational level. We launched a community of practice where participants shared experiences, challenges, and successes in mobilizing finance for their climate initiatives. Our CEO Helen Clarkson hosted an in-conversion session.
