Ohio-based quasar energy group, specializing in anaerobic digesters, has received a federal grant from the U.S. Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management to develop plastic from biodigester byproducts. This project is one of seven selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to explore new uses for captured carbon dioxide. ➡️Read more in this piece by Kathiann M. "What states do on (carbon dioxide removal) is important. They can pave the way for effective carbon removal by developing policies and projects that are tailored to their economic, geographic and political contexts. And they can be models for one another, inspiring collective action and cooperation to bolster responsible #carbonremoval approaches and reach not just state, but also federal, climate targets," says a piece from World Resources Institute. 💡Read this and more news and views on the #energytransition at Kathari News: https://lnkd.in/efg7ZMve

🏭🌫️💲"The 'polluter pays' principle has been a key part of climate discussions for years," writes Leonard Llewellyn, a professor of environmental science at the University of South Africa (UNISA), as he urges #COP29 to make it a reality. "Taxing polluters, making polluters pay for past pollution, and creating space for courts to award climate damages are some measures COP29 should agree to," he writes in a piece for The Conversation Africa. 💡Read more about this and other views on the #energytransition at Kathari.News Perspectives: https://lnkd.in/e4rrPHsc 📧 Sign up to follow Spotlight: COP29 for more news about the 2024 United Nations climate conference taking place Nov. 11 to 22 in Azerbaijan: https://lnkd.in/e5ykSpbh

☀️⚡👷🏾♀️Some 685 million people worldwide, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, lack access to electricity. Decentralized renewable energy (DRE), especially solar photovoltaics (PV), can help bridge this gap. Could addressing the gender gap in this sector help out too? A new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) explores the question. 💡Read more about it from Kathari.News Perspectives Editor Charlie Bush: https://lnkd.in/eJ449cMD #energytransition #solarPV #gendergap #energyequity

What's going on in the #energytransition today? Here is the latest at Kathari News: 💵𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: Several major energy companies are releasing their earnings reports today, including Shell, TotalEnergies, Cenovus and BP. Shell’s Q3 profits hit $6B, beating forecasts by 12% as LNG sales surged despite lower refining margins and oil prices. Reuters says the results could boost investor confidence as CEO Wael Sawan focuses on core oil, gas, and biofuels strengthens cash flow and reduces debt to its lowest since 2015. ➡️Read more: https://lnkd.in/ei9KmtxD 🛫𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐭: California is teaming up with Airlines for America to boost sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) availability to 200 million gallons by 2035. The California Air Resources Board says this would meet nearly 40% of in-state flight demand. About 11 million gallons of SAF are produced in the state per year. Meeting the target would involve also using SAF produced in other states. ➡️Read more: https://lnkd.in/ecPzzXdY ☢️𝐍𝐮𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥: Germany’s Konrad repository, set within a former iron ore mine near Salzgitter, is poised to become a long-term storage site for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants that Germany has shut down in recent years. Scheduled to open in the early 2030s, the project faces technical challenges, delays, and continued protests. While nuclear power is seen as part of the energy transition in some parts of the world, Germany decided to phase it out after the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan. ➡️Read more: https://lnkd.in/e-8NAgzD

Agrivoltaics, which involves integrating solar panels into fields of crops, greenhouses and livestock areas can help farmers reduce their carbon footprint while continuing to produce food. This can also mitigate one of the main criticisms often made of solar power — that solar farms “waste” vast tracts of agricultural land that could otherwise be used for food production. 💡Read the rest of the piece that Austin Kay, a researcher in sustainable advanced materials at Swansea University, wrote for The Conversation UK, via Kathari.News Perspectives: https://lnkd.in/eCEm9pN9

👉 Check out the latest #energytransition news from Kathari News: 🌐 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐩 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐬: A Trump victory could complicate 🇺🇸 USA #LNG exports to 🇨🇳 China due to a proposed 60% tariff on Chinese imports, despite the Republican presidential candidate's pledge to fast-track energy permits. With China holding long-term U.S. LNG contracts, analysts suggest potential re-exports by China to sidestep tariffs. The U.S. became the world’s largest LNG exporter last year, although the Biden administration has paused new permits to countries without free trade agreements. A federal judge recently blocked this policy and the Democratic campaign of Vice-President Kamala Harris has not said whether she would try to renew it. ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/d9hEP-_B 🚗 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: 🇨🇳 China has urged its automakers, including BYD, Saic Motor Co., Ltd. and GEELY to reconsider major investments in European nations supporting new tariffs of up to 45.3% on Chinese electric vehicles. 🇫🇷 France, 🇵🇱 Poland and 🇮🇹 Italy were among 10 🇪🇺 EU members that supported tariffs in a vote this month. Sources told Reuters that at an Oct. 10 meeting hosted by China’s Ministry of Commerce, automakers were advised to collectively co-ordinate investment plans and prioritize countries opposing the tariffs, such as 🇭🇺 Hungary. ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/dqU6eXPu 🚁 𝐅𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: Eve Air Mobility, the electric aircraft maker, has secured a $50M loan from Citibank, bolstering its development of battery-powered “flying cars” for short city trips. With nearly 3,000 pre-orders, Eve expects to certify and launch its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft by 2026, aiming for $14.5B in potential revenue. This latest loan, alongside a recent BNDES credit line and equity funding, brings Eve’s liquidity to approximately $480M. Eve is controlled by Brazilian planemaker Embraer. ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/d67-rACg
